poor mileage

i've waited two whole months and about 12,000 miles to make my first post here... i just managed to pry my own fingers from the steering wheel. i can't get enough!! after 300,000 in my old 6. 2 suburban (which i still love--i don't care what you guys say), i felt like i was in a whole new world. anyhow, y'all have gotten me all would up about BOMBing... and i don't even really know what it stands for. i know i need gagues first, but i'm not real sure where to go next. i know, i know, it's up to me--and that's half the fun. i just know that i do a lot of time on the freeway, and i'm looking for mileage, mileage, mileage. power would be fun, too, but i've already got WAY more than i'm used to (6. 2, remember?). i'm planning for a k&n filter, and straight exhaust sounds fun, too... just lookin for a little shove down the right path, that's all...

hey jawbreaker...

you got one fine truck too.

Once I find another line , Thats my next investment!

12V Rock too

Well you have the milage machine. 2wd is the way to go for that. Second in importance is the speed you drive. In my old truck (91 dodge cummins 4x4) if I drove at 55mph I got over 20 mpg. It didn't do me any good because I couldn't drive that slow. At 75 mph it got about 16. 5. As far as bombing for milage the only thing that has improved this on my truck was advancing the timing. The plate won't affect milage if you never get onto the throttle because it isn't doing anything before full throttle. The plate is what restrictes fuel at full throttle. When I went from 180 injectors to 215 injectors it dropped my highway milage about 1mpg. Before I had the injectors changed I got about 19. 5 at 75 mph. After I got 18. 5 at 75mph. Piers told me that delivery valves would drop milage due to a lack of air/fuel controll. Govener springs will not affect milage as long as your not running at high rpms. I think that switching to a 913 pump for a 215 hp engine would improve both milage and power. The 913 has bigger barrels for the plungers so the same amount of fuel can be injected faster and burn more completly before the piston travels as far. The 913 also advances the timing at higher rpms thus giving more power with the same amount of fuel. I believe that this is the only reason that the manuals get better milage on the highway. The only other difference is the pump on the automatic trans. I don't think that this draws enough hp to affect milage. When the tc is locked there is 100% power transfer and it is exactly the same as a manual trans accept for the minimal drag from that pump. So as far as bombing to improve milage you will never get anywhere from anything other than timing (empty anyway, I haven't towed anything with mine since I started messing with it). Most of the mods won't affect milage unless you put your foot in it. I don't care what the other people on this board say about this as this is what my experience has been. If you go with a bigger injector the fuel won't atomize as well thus giving you less efficiency. 12 valve engines aren't made to be efficient at high rpms and if you get gov springs and rev it that high it will suck down the fuel. And if you get a less restrictive plate it allowes the pump to inject more fuel. It doesn't take much intellegence to figure out what that will do for milage. Have fun and remember that all these things give you more power and more power means more fuel. Most of them won't affect milage unless you use the power, but what is the point of more power unless you use it? Enjoy that ram. There is nothing more sweet than a second gen dodge ram. I hate the first gens. Get off this forum and go enjoy that thing if your after milage. But if you want power then read on!!!!

Welcome

I won't knock your 6. 2, cause I had 2 good ones myself. However I see that you found out the same thing that I did, "CUMMINS ROCKS". I've already got the Bomb bug (see sig. ) and I can tell ya' that it's hard to get rid of. BTW B. O. M. B. stands for ;

If ya got any questions feel free to ask , cause someone on this site is bound to have an answer. Best 35 bucks I've spent.

before you buy the KN filter check out the Big Honking Filter thread. I believe that unit will out perform the KN and filter better also and be less money too. I installed one on my truck and am impressed with the results. EGTs down and smoke down also.

Same as Deezul said. The Moparguy filter was a nice upgrade. Killed my smoke problem. Enjoy the new truck and welcome to the TDR !
