Today I was headed south on I-15 in Mira Loma. Doing about 65 in the middle lane. Loud bang as I went under the new overpass. Saw pieces of metal bouncing on the freeway behind my truck. Realized that there was no longer forward propulsion. Managed to coast past the K-rail and get pulled over on the shoulder. Called roadside assist and then got out to look at the carnage. A grenade took off the driver's side of the transfer case. The front driveshaft wrapped around the fuel line and the wiring harness to the rear and ripped everything apart.

7 year/70,000 mile warranty..... 71,600 miles on my truck.

Have asked VERY NICELY for Chrysler to consider this for "goodwill" warranty coverage. Waiting patiently for word back.

Please don't tell me how much this is going to cost. There is not that much vaseline in the world.

Everyone else have a nice day.

I wouldn't hold my breath for D/C to come through... . on second thought I do not think I would want them handling a job like that anyways. Where'd you take it too?

The truck is at my shop in Norco. No, I won't take it to them until I have an agreement that they will cover it.

I will probably take it to Ontario Dodge if I can get it covered as I have some personal connections there. Otherwise, I will get a salvage yard T/C, get it running to fool a used car manager and trade it in on something else.

2004. 5 6-speed Quad/Short.

No mods. (ok, so I replaced the stereo and put a new seat in... )

71,600 miles.

Drive like a grandma (20. 5 mpg?) Rarely use 4wd. (once a year?)

Truck is BABIED because it was supposed to last FOREVER!!! Was not planning to buy another truck again. So much for that...

Situation Update

Truck was towed to Ontario Dodge today at the request of Chrysler. They will inspect it and get back to me. Everyone wish me luck please.

Update

Chrysler is going to replace the transfer case for me.

As the truck is "technically" out of warranty, they are "unable" to repair the associated damage.

However, my insurance company will cover it as damage caused by mechanical failure (just as if a wheel were to fall off while driving and you have an accident. ) For the insurance company, this means paying for the body shop to pull the cab off and cut a section of the bottom of the cab out since the driveshaft managed to put a hole in it. They will also be replacing fuel and electrical. My somewhat educated guess puts the total for the insurance company at about $5000.

This repair will wind up costing me $300.

"Dodged" another bullet. Now to let the truck sit in the garage until I can afford to get rid of it. Don't trust it any more. What else is going to go wrong that won't be covered next time?

Since the insurance company is covering everything else, I have not seen an itemized list of damaged parts. I heard rear driveshaft today and brake lines but will probably not know until they deliver the vehicle to me. I'm not planning on it being done until the middle of June.
