On my way home this evening, just got off of the highway, I had a strange sound occur under slight acceleration. Sounded like an impact gun/wrench going off in my drivetrain. The last time I heard it(just barely a year ago), it was the synchronizer gear getting into another gear(or visa versa) in my transfer case. Has anyone else had this problem???

Thanks in advance,
scott

You have broken a "C" clip on the tailshaft of your transfer case. The grinding is the gear running down the shaft, away from the gear that it is meshed with, as you increase torque. Engaging 4 wheel drive will get you home, but it is hard on the front end when turning on dry pavement. It has happened to my truck twice. Warranty both times. Anyone else?

Hey Scott,
I had a sharp noise occur on my truck about 6 months ago. It happened just as I was passing an 18 wheeler so I thought it was road debris. I stopped at a store a couple miles down the road and when I came back out there was a puddle of engine oil under my beloved ram! Turns out I lost the locating dowel under my timing cover. It went through the top of the cover. New cover, gears and camshaft all covered under warranty (got to love that 100K warranty). The truck ran fine all the way home. I saved the **** dowel pin.
Good Luck
Steve

This sounds exactly like what happened to me, the guy from the transmission shop said a spacer washer or something on the rear of the shaft broke and allowed the shaft to slide back when torque applied from acceleration. This caused on heck of a grinding noise in the transfer case. Only occured when accelerating. Would never do it when 4x4 engaged. Unfortunatly I was out of warranty and this simple $1 part run up a shop bill close to $500.
