I thought EVERYTHING was big in Texas?

Not your fault. But yer still fired!

Where do you find body panels for a lawn tractor?

Been looking at houses in Texas (Fort Worth) and it seems all the garages are 20 x 20. Home prices are very low compared to us out here and was thinking of moving. Would be nice to be able to fit my trucks in the garage or at least be able to pull them in for service. Am I looking in the wrong city?

Only if your looking to sell later for more money. I would be looking in California for property if I wanted to make money.

Anchorage Alaska is not a bad place for real estate either, my home has been rising about 10-12% a year... . no complaints from me other that it makes my property tax go up.

Yep, garages are bigger in Texas. You have to look in the right places. I live 20 miles north of Fort Worth. My garage is 40' wide by 50' long with 14' wide by 14' high doors... plenty of room for my dually and more!. :D

Anyone else know of any good places to live near Fort Worth?

What kind of place are you looking for? Where is your work location? Have you been to the area to look around yet? There are lots of choices.

For example, I live just north of the Alliance Airport/Texas Motor Speedway complex. It's about a 20 minute drive to downtown Fort Worth and DFW Airport and about 30-40 minutes to Dallas, depending on the traffic. Everything we could possibly need can be found in the local towns without having to go into the cities.

Would love to find about 5 achers with nice home (but not too big 2500 sq ft max) and maybe a small shop. I havent been there before but was planning a trip to check it out this summer. Work would be around Fort Worth area.

Make sure you look around and see what prevailing wages are in the field you want to work in. You may be surprised, even though housing may be cheaper, wages might be on par with that also.

There is a big demand for the 5 acre lots you are looking for and they are selling at a premium price. In the area where I live, the 5 acre lots, when you can find them, are selling for $100K and up and that's no city water, sewer, or natural gas, only electric utility. You will have to drill a well which can cost 10-15K and install an aerobic sewer system, another couple of grand. The deed restrictions may limit the size and type of house and limit the type of shop building you want.

I don't want to sound too discouraging, but lots of folks want to move out of the city and have some "elbow room". You might have better luck looking at property northwest of Fort Worth in the Azle and Springtown areas or even up in the Wise County.

This area in southwest Denton County is really a "hot" area in real estate terms because of the growth of the Alliance Airport industrial/distribution complex. Over 30,000 people work in the area where there was only cattle and wheat fields 20 years ago.

I'm heading out that way in about 3 weeks to check out the Denton area. California is getting WAY too expensive, and a blue state.

I bought 1 1/2 years ago in Copperas Cove, actually just on NW outskirts in a nice development of 1 to 1 1/2 acre lots, 2000 sq feet, all brick, 3 car garage 26x30 ft on 1. 2 acres, I paid $119,600. Now yes I am in central Texas but house prices outside the large metroplexes are very very good.

Yep, Denton is a good area to live. My wife and I have lived and worked in the north Texas area all our lives and we chose to live in the Denton area when we retired. It doesn't have the big city hassles and problems(yet) and still close to everything. It's hard for us to realize that the population is nearing 100,000. Denton still has a bit of the "college town" atmosphere since it's the home of two universities. Just about everything you need in town with Dallas and Forth Worth are 30-40 minutes away. You'll have access to the world from DFW airport which is also about 20-30 minutes away.

Welcome and come check it out...

North of Dallas And Ft. Worth are fairly hot as property goes right now and traffic reflects that. You can get about the same distance from downtowns and save money and time (if you commute) by looking south. Burleson, Cedar Hill, are pretty nice areas, with Cedar Hill getting my prefernce as they have rolling wooded hills. I live in Irving on a little lake and it puts me almost dead center between the two cities just 2 miles north of I30 (major corridor between D-FW) and I can get to either downtown in rush hour in 30 minutes. Weare near the Trinty river flood plain so not much new devlopment can occur in our area; kinda country feel but right smack in the middle of town. Downside to where I live houses are smaller (1500- 2200 ft2) and the garage you cannot get an extended cab into

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I cant wait to get out there and check out som properties. A house identical to mine but on the main street just sold in 1 week for $430k. I can probably get $455k for mine based on that sale. Just bought it 1 yr ago last month for $290k.

Go for it... take the money and run before that "bubble" bursts.

Depending on what you owe on your present house, you should find property like you are looking for using what you have left over as a nice down payment.
