I can usually muddle thru just about anything, from wiring in a hot tub, to rebuilding a motorcycle or an old truck. When it's done, it works, and there is no call back.

I read the good info here on the TDR, and I think I can change the fuel filter on my 6. 7.

So, I order the new updated filter and cannister from Geno's, and it arrives, and I run the truck up into the driveway, start the oil change, and while it is draining, start reading the instructions for the fuel filter change. I also log in real quick for a quick reminder from those who have gone before.

I find my drain box, and set it under the hose I have attached to the drain wheel on the old filter cannister, and loosen the wheel. Just a few drips run down the tube, good, I have been lucky with the fuel I am running. OK, disconnect the W/I/F sensor. Hmmm, it ain't releasing. I squeeze the heck out of that tab, and I can't get it to drop. OK, slide back under the truck, slide the drain box off to the side with my head. (Note: dummy, get a painters cap before ya do this again. ) Reach up to the bottom of the cannister, thinking really nice thots about the dude that thought this location was a good idea for something you have to keep clean, and start working the tab again. Still can't get that thing to release. Try prying the tab with my Buck Knife, and realize that when my hand slips off that tool, it might be painful. And I am looking at the electrical posts on the starter, and wondering why I didn't disconnect the batteries before I started this. Slide back out, go get a real screwdriver, slide back under, and start working the tab again. I wonder if that mount for the front axle locating arm will leave a bruise, as I try to get some leverage on the tab. I am considering, at this point, just ripping the wires out, or breaking the mount off the cannister, and I finally get the tip in, it is either gonna break off or release, and it pops out! OK, slide out, move drain box back under hose, and try to turn cannister to break the seal. Hah, not happening. OK, slide back out, go find the 1/2" drive and extensions and universal. Getting dark now. Grand daughter is no longer helping, I think she is smarter than me. Slide the drain box outta the way with my head, trying to thread the extensions and universal up thru the tubes, hoses, and frame, while it is flopping around, and getting closer to the starter posts, (wasn't I gonna disconnect the batteries here somewhere... ) finally get it in, and it turns! Yay. Pull the drain box back under the tube, release the drain wheel, and turn the cannister, and it actually drains where it was supposed to. Go get coffee and a cookie, while it drains. Only I don't know how much fuel is left in the cannister. I found out when I tried to work that thing out thru the Rube Goldberg maze of wires, tubes, and other stuff between the filter mount, and freedom. At least its not a really good flannel shirt.

Now I gotta get the new one back in. I can't believe I can't get it back in there, did it grow when I wasn't looking? At least it is not spitting diesel juice at me. I think I must need new glasses, 'cause I can't see where this is going anymore. Finally get it in, tighten it up, and remember before I prime it, that I still have 3 gallons of oil to put back in the motor.

It is done, it runs, and it doesn't leak. Yay.

I've changed mine twice now at 30K and had the same pleasure as you did. Some people access the fuel filter thru the wheel well. One of the TDR issues also talked about re-arranging the oil dip stick and some wiring to access it from above. Next time I'm going to look into that option.
