This is disgusting

Well, we got back from our annual summer trek to Colorado. Everytime I get back to this 100+ degree weather I wish I had just stayed in CO. I could live with the winters for the cooler summers.

The truck pulled the new 37' Montana with ease. It went across the scales at 21,980lbs. A tad heavier than I had figured, but we carried a ton of stuff this time. The front axle was 5500lbs. The rear was 6680, and the trailer was 9800lbs. The new airbags sure made the towing real smooth. . a great addition for a heavy trailer. I averaged 9. 6 towing with a low of 8. 6 going from Amarillo to Raton... . very windy this time, and a high of 11. 8 from Walsenburg to Leadville. We run at 65-70 most of the time. The truck ran the passes great. . getting up most at 50-55 in drive. Monarch was tuff going to Gunnison. It was around 40-45 in second behind a bunch of traffic. That was about all the truck had in it anyway.

We managed to get the big rig stuck in a dry lake bottom... Taylor reservoir Northwest of Gunnison. Two more got stuck trying to get it out. We snapped the winch cable on mine on the front bumper trying to winch a truck out behind me. Luckily the cable was almost all the way out. I reattached it the next day. After digging on mine for a couple of hours..... the front end was resting on the oil pan. . we managed to get it out with two trucks pulling at the same time. That was a good lessen learned. Emerald Lake north of Crested Butte is a real nice place to drag a fire up to. We ventured up 12 new passes this time around trying to find the ultimate. The area around Ouray is a blast. We like that the best so far. Leadville was a let down. We had heard a lot of nice things about this town, but didn't really care for it. It seems to be going downhill. We made a bunch of day trips from there. Aspen is pretty sweet, but pricey!! The DRW was a hoot coming down the West side of Independence Pass into Aspen. The whole world just kind of stopped for us.

We chatted with a ton of truck owners at all the RV parks. A couple of guys are going to be chipping their rigs after riding in ours. Everybody seemed pretty happy with what they were making payments on. We only saw two Duramaxes. One was towing a 24ft trailer. He was getting around 13 towing it at 70mph. It was a 4X4 2500 Extended Cab. The other guy had a 33 ft Cardinal fiver. He wasn't completely satisfied. His was a 4X2 2500 2500 extended cab. He thought his old 8. 1 gasser had more power than the diesel. He averaged about 2 mpg more in the diesel than the gasser, but had better speed up the hills in the gasser. He was getting around 10 mpg. He wanted the 4. 10's his gasser had. Neither one had any engine or drivetrain issues. They both had around 20K miles.

All in all a great trip. I would have a blast living up there... it is a definite option in about 10 years... CJ

I agree Cobra

everytime we leave Wahington and go east to Montana I have a hard time heading west again.

This time it was St. Regis Montana... ... .

Man I need to get a life ;)

Life is always greener on the other side

I'm driving out there in 4 weeks :D I used to live in Crested Butte (Ski:cool:Bumin) and mved back east. Love to spend as much time out there as I can. How was that trail from Lake City to Ouray? Did you attempt it? I want to try it this year. And if RMTDR is doing anything I want to say hello.

Hey Mactruck, I think most of those trails have too tight of switchbacks for our trucks. You need something short like a jeep. We did Engineers pass and Cinammon pass from Silverton in a rented jeep. That was the most fun I have ever had in Colorado! I definately recommend doing the trails around the Silverton/Ouray area. Hey CJ, when you get ready to move, let me know, I'll follow you:)

CJ: That's what RVs are for. So you can spend summers in Colo. Winters in Az. Fall down on the coast. Remember, if you have to run the AC or heater more than 2 hours a day, you are in the wrong place.

Whatever you do, don't move to Colorado! It's a horrible place to live. Too much sun, not near enough humidity, and horrible wildlife congestion. Plus, the incidences of hemmoragic fever, bubonic plague, and other dread diseases are rampant! (Actually, that's more common on the western slope - if you must come, go there. ) Yup, we're in a truly 3rd world environment here. Stay away!

;)

Hey guys. . I do have to agree with you completely... boy do I love it here in Colorado.

If you guys have any plans on moving here... let me know, I'd be glad to gather up any information possible to help make your transition painless.

Mactruck - whenever you are here give me a call 303-885-2875... . Well make sure we get the RMTDR together and party!!!!

Lived in Greeley for about 9 months, and worked in Ft Collins. Hated the taxes, and the cold weather is too much for me. My wife and I moved back to Texas, and we will die here. My parents still live there, and they love it. Been there, done that, moved back!

God Bless Texas!!

Orginally I am from TX, lived in Colorado for 4 years before moving here to NE. I would like to go back to Colorado eventually, and buy some land southwest of Denver out in the foothills.

WOWZY... the PSD does the trailer pulling. Four doors and four rear tires make it the choice everytime. The kids have legs now. I did pull the trailer with the Cummins for a short trip a few months ago. It pulled it fine, but the pin weight is a little much for the single wheels.

Klenger... . I know what you mean. . when I lived in WA. we all hated the people coming up from CA.

Mactruck... . We did not make the Ouray to Silverton trip. We were going to stay at Fun Valley in Southfork, but stayed in Gunnison instead. The trip to Ouray was much easier and shorter from Gunnison. We did climb up all the way into Yankee Boy Basin Southwest of Ouray in the DRW. It was tight in spots, but not to bad. It was really nice up there. The trip from Crested Butte to Emerald Lake just short of Schofield Pass was a nice trip as well.

Hale on wheels... I can't believe an Aggie would follow a Longhorn anywhere... well maybe to Colorado.

Barry... . We make all of those trips only we do Southern CA. in the spring staying in AZ. for a few days. My kids are in school and too young to leave so I go when I can. In a few years we will venture longer and farther.

We have traveled to all but three continental states in trailers... . CO is a favorite as well as Maine and Washington. We went all over WA. when we lived there. It is a little far now so we usually fly to visit. The kids love the Fl. Panhandle. Great beaches that are usually deserted... . CJ

One of the other things I hate about Colorado is there are these big hills west of Denver that get in the way when you want to go camping. Winding roads, up and down, down and up, left then right... They also block the view of the sun sets from the Denver area. And then there's those professional sports teams creating traffic jams on Sunday afternoons near downtown.

Now that I think about it some more, I'm sure you won't like it here either.

If you would look at the weather channal, you'd have seen we've been have our share of 100*+ days.

100° in CO and 100° in NE and TX are two very different things.

It was funny when I moved from TX to CO the first summer everone compalining how hot it was ... . and it seemd great to me. I still chuckle over the reactions I would get working outside in the summertime. I love the weather in CO and miss it greatly.

Come on back!

Trying to let NE grow on me, my job here I love what I do. That I feel is rather important, I mean I actually look forward to going to work most of the time. And the fact it pays pretty good helps too. If in a couple of years I don't like it still I'll look for a position of the same level out in the field in Denver.

The ironic part of work is I work most all the Colorado territory on the UP Denver west and south are all mine... ... :D

The thing about 100 degree days in CO. is that they have virtually no humidity. When the sun goes down the heat goes away. In Texas it is still in the nineties at 10 o'clock. Lows can be 85 in July and August with 100 coming right after noon. The parts of CO. I enjoy... not the Eastern slope, except for the CO. Springs area rarely see 100's... a day in the nineties likely sets a record. We stayed in Leadville for a week. . why I am not sure... losts of daytrips. The temperature never went above 70. The lows were around 40 every night. We saw sleet several afternoons... . crazy for July/Aug. Gunnison got to around 85 one day, but the evenings were still in the low 50's. That is nice weather coming from TX. The trade off is the brutal winters those towns can get. In Seattle the tradeoff was a steady drizzle almost everyday in the winter and a lot of days in the spring. I have not seen a better looking city and surrounding area than Seattle in the middle of winter on a perfect sun shiny day. Going East or West across across Lake WA. is a postcard... . CJ
