Am I way behind the game here? I was reading through my owners manual amd they suggest the manual transmissions "Do not require periodic changing". What is up with that? Does Chrysler somehow believe the diffs and transfer case get more wear and use than the transmission? Having personally replaced the bearings in a NV 4500 at only 100k because the oil was only changed once I find this really difficult to believe. What do you all think? Mine will be changed at least every 25k.

Lifetime fill means the OEM expects it to hold together long enough to get through the warranty period. Then its your bill. Nough said.

The rear axle gets more punishment than the transmission, 'cause remember the lower the gear the more the torque is MULTIPLIED coming down from that mighty Cummins TD. That's why some fluid changes are spec'd. Plus with the manual you're dividing up the wear between several gears while the rear axle it's the same gears 100% of the time.

But I agree, change that transmission fluid periodically! I'm going to do 30K intervals myself which works out nicely to every other oil change.

I have always been amazed but the owners manual quote "DOES NOT REQUIRED PERIODIC CHANGES" I guess you get new oil with every new transmission you replace if you never change the oil. In the same owners manual it tells you to change the wiper blades !!!

I think all these new "lubed for life" or "does not require periodic changing" crapola is to make the trucks more appealing to 70 year old grandmas who use them to travel back and forth to church once a week and don't want to have to worry about greasing U-joints, ball joints, and replacing transmission fluid. But guess what? 70 year old grandmas DON'T BUY HEAVY DUTY PICKUPS!

I think I've got it!

Hey guys, I may have figured this thing out! By not changing the transmission oil we're guaranteed to have to pull the trans for a rebuild in about 60k and that's a perfect opportunity to shove in a high performance clutch. You see, DC knew what they were doing. They want us to bomb! And to think I had so little faith.

Gotta love it. We are expected to change our diff fluid every 15,000 miles with $20 a quart Mopar synthetic gear lube, but we are never supposed to change the transmission fluid:rolleyes:

I just did a bit of math... in 100,000 miles changing the gear lube every 15,000 miles with Mopar synthetic lube you will spend $1400. Might as well not change the lube and just replace the gears at 100,000 miles:rolleyes:

I never thought of it that way... good thinking, ab7fh!

I think I've decided to tell DC to shove their $20/quart axle fluid you-know-where. I'll use Mobil 1 instead.
