Competition Ice Bath Intercooler?

There is one on the Yellow S/B that Maddog raced at the event in Canada. They work great, allot better than an air to air ever thought about but don't skimp on size.

Looks bad when the lid is not completely tightened down and you cascade 10 gallons of water and ice over the rear spoiler... ... .

Dry Ice may be colder, but it's the specific heat capacity of gaseous CO2 SUCKS!!!!! While you may have a chunk of Dry Ice in the cooler, Gaseous CO2 is what is contacting the heat transfer surfaces inside the cooler... .



Ice Water will remove more heat in an equivelantly sized heat exchanger.



Just make sure to replenish the ice after each run.

ok, stupid therotical question.

What is the coldest temp that you can cool the air to and have no more gain in HP/Trq.

To make this absolutly clear, the temp after the turbo(s), right at the intake manifold.

70F, 50F, 32F, 0f, -40F, -256F???
 
I don't know the answer to that one, but...



Making too good of an intercooler could cause one issue. Say you went nuts and used liquid nitrogen for the coolant. The stuff is so doggone cold that virtually any water that hits it will freeze immediately, and on a humid summer day, commonly available intercoolers would probably plug solid.



I think icewater is probably a good bet because you'll get good heat extraction and won't be cold enough to freeze ambient water (it'll liquefy though). You could probably get away with Co2/acetone/alcohol for a short while.
 
The idea behind the ice bath intercooler is to reduce parasitic Hp load on the engine while maximizing the engine Hp due to a cooler air charge.



Yeah, also I think for combustion reasons too cold would be just as bad as too hot. Additionally, at some point the added thermal stresses due to a very severe termperature change could begin to cause mechincal problems.



At some point the lines would cross for the greatest efficientcy / reliability.
