<font color=blue>Ya its a rerun, I watched some of it again tonight. I saw it several weeks ago, kinda interesting. Too cold for me tho..... I like to hibernate when its cold.

Sure beats building a road though. What I found interesting was that when a truck enters on a frozen lake too fast it causes a wave under the ice that can destroy the "highway".

Figured it might be a re-run. I've had so many irons in the fire for the past few months that I have had no time for TV or the TDR. Decided to take the day off today and see whats going on.

What a great show. I wouldn't want to drive my truck on a frozen lake let alone a semi! The history channel rules!!!! Lake Erie is getting a substantial amount of ice on it. Maybe in a month or two I will get some chevy owner to try it.

I'm a History and TLC channel junkie #ad
I was sure to not miss the program today.

I was disappointed they didn't go into much detail about keeping the diesels from gelling and operating at those extreme temps. It didn't look like any of the rigs laying over at the "truck stop" had any way to plug in so I assume they were idled overnight.

Those huge silos they were hauling. . . wouldn't take a strong wind gust to topple one of those #ad

I also noticed they didn't mention any of the newer trucks having the problems with snapping frames/ steel in cold weather (-60). Makes me glad I'm in sunny Colorado! They also didn't talk much about losing traction/ jackknife. Just that they take it slow and obey the rules.

Haven't driven on any yet, but there are a few river crossings in the north from town to town that are open most of the winter.
Some guys were telling me that with their mechanic trucks (3500,service body) they just drive in at straight line and hope the corners are padded with drifts, try to turn but if not just bounce off the drifts.
They have ice roads over the muskeg in northern Alberta that are pretty much the same idea.

I read a book a few years ago about the ice roads. I think it was titled Dennison's Ice Road. It went into more detail than the History channel especially about losing some trucks or dozers through the ice.

Car And Driver magazine did an article about that very subject, about a year ago. Can't remember what month.
One thing I remember reading in there is the drivers are forbidden to wear seat belts, they are told to JUMP if the rig starts to break through. Made the hair stand up on the back of my neck thinking about it.

They know their business though and they haven't lost a driver in the last 10 years, and only a dozen total since Dennison started this operation. Because there is very little margin for error thought they must abide strictly by the rules.

Some of are large lakes up here have street names on them. So the ice fisherman don't get lost. About 20 inchs of ice on lakes up here now. That will support plow trucks plowing these streets on ice.

I've seen people drive small trucks (jeeps etc) on the Barnegat bay.
This was only a few years ago.
It's probibally frozen again, this has been a fairly cold winter sofar.
I couldnt imagine driving a loaded semi on frozen water.

Kat. . Thanks. . I'll be on it tonight !!

What a great show! Wish they would have talked more though about the engines used in the trucks (CUMMINS, Cat, or Detroit) and if they use a fuel supplement. I'm assuming they at least burn straight #1?

I think maybe a PSD driver should try driving across Lake Superior #ad
