I read on the Ford site a topic about using the cruise control on the '03 and new trucks to idle up the engine.

The post said something like with the truck in P or N, you could turn on the cruise control and use the speed up/down buttons to adjust the idle speed. Supposedly you'd have to have your truck re-flashed for this.

Is it true? And would this work on the 24V trucks? Oooooh I hope so. I love the way the big diesel RV pushers can rev their engines up by foot, and set the cruise control and it holds their rpms where their foot took it, until they hit the brake or throttle. That's too smooth.

Lemme know, lemme know, lemme know!!!!

Yep I had my 04 reflashed to have the High Idle enabled ans tis nice. I was looking at buying an aftermarket one untell I found this nice little trick. This will only work on the 04's so on anythinng else you would have to buy an aftermarket one.

I don't know about the 24v, but on the chevy 6. 5 with electronic throttle, there is a PTO setting that can be used by grounding out a specific contact on the engine harness that will cause the computer to rev the engine at a higher rpm. There has to be something like this for the dodge. Otherwise use the throttle positioner like the first gens had.

Aftermarket...

I just called about the US Diesel Parts High Idler. That unit is pretty pricey. Its a friggin rheostat for crying out loud. Anybody know where I can get that thing at a reasonable cost?

Also, I'm not giving up on the 24V cruise control buttons working like the '04's. It should be doable. The programming may not exist, but it could be written. How to go about that is what I don't know. Anybody got any feedback on that?

JyRO,

Unfortunetly the high idle feature is only available on 2004 (not 04. 5) automatic transmission equipped trucks. Another TDR member researched this extensively through both DC and a regular Cummins shop. Do a search under "high idle" in the 3rd gen forums and you should get a lot of info.
