Hey guys I'm completely new to all of this so bare with me. I've been reading these forums for the past year now and I finally got registered, so maybe you could help me out. My truck is a 91 without and intercooler and it has 165k on it. When its hot and sitting at a stop light in gear, it puffs black smoke. There is no heavy acceleration smoke, and there it doesn't puff black smoke when it's at idle in park. There are no mods to the injector pump of any kind and as far as I know, the pump hasn't been replaced or rebuilt. I bought the truck used a year ago. My first diesel... and I LOVE IT. Any ideas as to why it may be doing this? Thanks. Also since it's my first diesel and I'm still learning, any helpful hints or modification ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Just a couple of things that you may want to look at, first the turbo boost control line the second is the KSB solinoid. As Scott stated the smoke is caused by unburnt fuel. The turbo boost control line, is a short line that runs between the intake manifold and the diaphram housing on the top of the injection pump. Check it for leks in this line. The ksb solinoid, located on the side of the injection pump, changes the fuel mixture when the engine is cold. It is cycled by a thermostatic switch, this may be stuck in the on position, you could chech this with a test lamp, when the engine is warm. The only other thing may be the smoke screw needs adjusting, but check the other items first.
The best first mod is to install boost and exhaust temperature gauges. Also have a look at the TST web site, lots of info on adjusting the pump.

Welcome aboard. I lso am still learning about these wonderful Diesels. I do know that Black smoke is fuel not being burned in the motor. So that is better then Blue or White. As for doing mods to the motor. Searching through the forum will help you out an awful lot. I would first get gauges installed because then you can watch how it is stock and see if your mods are better or worse. Have a wonderful New Year... .
