Hello, recently when starting my truck on a moderately cold day - temp about 27° F - the truck starts right up, but then the idle drops down for a fraction of a second (like a switch was flipped off and back on) and returns to normal, then all is well. It has done it 3 times in the last couple of weeks. It's like the engine is going to die, but then picks up and is ok.

Perhaps related or not related, occasionally when I come up to a stop and push the clutch in the engine idle will only go down to 1,000 rpm. It seems to do it at the same stop sign time after time. I found if it does this idle at 1,000 rpm, if I push in hard on the brake pedal, the idle will go back to normal. This is with the engine at normal operating temperature, and it's not the typical high idle that happens after the truck has been idling in cold weather.

Truck is an 03, 5.9, with 6 speed.
No check engine light on, but I checked for codes anyway and got two P0514 "Battery Temperature Sensor Performance / Rationality"

Thanks,
Blake

The P0514 is a common nuisance code that crops up sometimes in cold weather. I believe it has to do with the battery temperature not rising as rapidly as the computer would like, which is understandable in cold weather. It's generally safe to ignore unless you are having battery problems.

Your idle issues sound to me like fuel injection related issues (sticking injector), although it's interesting that it occurs at the same stop light every time.

Thanks for the reply Ryan. Yesterday, after clearing the P0514 code the night before, the truck started and ran like new. It was considerably warmer when I started the truck than the day before, so any correlation between clearing the code and the lack of the idling issue may not exist.

Hopefully the problem does not return.

How much do dealers generally charge to do an update? Is there a chance it could mess up anything else? I still get the Check Gauges momentary flash now and then. Thanks.

There was a s/w update to stop the P0514 and phantom chime issues back in the day.
It's worth getting if your at the dealer.

Most will charge an hour to do a flash. The code is a rationality code. 18-022-07 is the tsb that addresses your code,it is an old software pkg, there has been a few more up-dates since that was released. The newest update will have that plus all the newer up-dates.If you have a friend with a smarty you can use it to update your stock software
