Periodically my engine surges at idle (maybe 50-100 rpm). I did a search on surging and most of the TPS problems seem to happen while cold and/or while the truck is in motion. This is not how mine works, it simply surges at idle with no real symptoms when you start to drive. The only times that it has done it have been after a long drive with the truck and ambient temperatures warm. It isn't the grid heaters. Any ideas? I also have an intermittant hard start (takes several seconds of cranking), but I am not sure if the problems are related.

Thanks

Dave.

If you had half as many valves, aka "Properly":) I would suggest a dirty injector. Don't know about those E-Lec-Tronic injectors though. A poor spray pattern/leaky injector would fit the hard starting too. It wasn't much, but that's all I got. Good luck, Greg

My truck has done this since it was new. When the truck is cold the idle is real solid. As soon as it warms up I have a erractic idle. Alot of guys on here have the same thing, so I think it's normal.

As for the hard start problem I can't help you.

Try some Power Service at the high injector cleaner concentration. The container is 3 quarts and I use a quart per tankful for three tanks in a row. I think this helps my idle surge. Mine also only comes on when the truck is warm. I notice it most when I drive at highway speeds and then take and exit ramp and stop at a light.

I own a 98. 5 24V with 145,000 miles. Today after a freeway trip of 75 miles I noticed an idle fluctuation of 50 rpm above and below the 800rpm in drive that it always idles at. It accelerated just fine. I went into a parts store and 20 min. later I had a good cranking speed but no start. I had good fuel pressure to the pump. "I have a guage". I beat on the injector pump alittle and it fired right up. I called my local fuel injection expert and he told me that it was the begining of the end for the injection pump. I had heard all the stories of mechanical failure of the injection pumps but not electrical. I can't say that's your problem or even mine but for 1600. 00 dollars I will find out. By the way Bosh is now on it's fifth revision for that pump.

If it is the injection pump, I wish it would just hurry up and die already! I'm getting tired of the " we couldn't duplicate the problem " crap.
