Ok, anybody hear of something that would fit this bill?

I often respond to accidents and am on the side of the road alot in bad weather. I'm looking for a switch I can throw that will force the engine to idle and nothing else. As I get out of the truck I want to leave it running at idle (with or without keys is fine) but if someone "of questionable character" were to hop in and try and take off the accelerator would be disabled and at worse they'd idle away and be an easy catch for officers. So it's not a kill switch, more like a limiter... .

Brian,

I had that happen accidentally. It was on an '03, but there might be something similar available. I was driving down the road, fat, dumb, and happy, and the truck went to idle--nothing more. Shutting off and restarting fixed it, but I had a trouble code--here's what sag2 found in the Powertrain Diagnostic manual and reported back to me:

P2121 is "APP volts do not agree with idle validation signal" Sounds like one of the idle validation switches showed closed while you were running down the road. ECM says that can't be, and shut the fuel off. Is your APP on the engine or under the battery? Two different procedures to check, depending on which one you have.

There may be a clue in this as to something that could be intentionally 'misconfigured' ;)

The $69 remote starter I installed from JC Whitney would work great for what you need plus you would have the remote starter and keyless entry. The way it works is you can leave your engine running without the key inserted but once a person touches the brake pedal it will die and not restart.

illflem, more info please. What gen, year? And Brand/cat # for the remote start switch? I'm assuming the vehicle must already have keyless entry?

Cheers,

Steve J.
