Looking for just the bearing part # for the idler pulley. Did an exhaustive search, didn't find what I was looking for. I know it is a common part # for the $3 bearing. Looking to do the PM on it. Thanks

Why not just buy the complete pulley from Cummins, p/n 4946708. It's not expensive and the grooves do wear as well. David

I never wrote the number down but my local NAPA was easily able to source it.

Oops, I had them source the tensioner pulley bearing, not the idler although they should be able to do that as well.

If you press it out it will be marked. Or if you have a caliper you can get really close to the size, ID, OD and width without taking it apart. Google the dimensions.

I agree with Shadrack, if this were a pulley on a lawn mower I might/have replaced the bearings without buying the somplete pulley. The bearing is probably a common size but will come in several configurations, sealed, shielded, etc and most likely is held in place by either some rolled over edge or peening. The pulley probably won't be more than twice the price of the bearing and you won't have to worry about it coming apart and taking out the belt and stranding you somewhere for a while. bg

My all steel pulley is 16+ years old and perfect condition. The bearing is simply pressed in it is not retained by anything. Most of what you get as far as aftermarket is concerned is junk plastic that will wear out and groove.
BTW I have snapped my grease needle on the end of my gun a few times and pumped a shot or 2 of grease into the bearings Of both my idler and tensioner. I've also greased my front unit bearings (still OEM also).

Did you ever come up with a number? Looks like it might be a 6203 (40mm x 12mm for a 17mm shaft) but there are many configurations: 6203-2RS double sealed or 6203-2Z double shielded, permanently lubricated, etc. Prices from McMaster anywhere from $6 on up.

BTW mine just ate itself at 140K and the number is not readable.

I just checked the pulley using the ESN from my '06. The whole idler pulley sells for around $37.00 at Cummins. I would go on the theory that it all wore together and replace the entire thing.

Part Number is 4946708 for mine but we really should have your VIN or ESN to make sure this is the correct part.

My branches don't stock it so they don't obviously give much trouble. The Harrisburg PDC does have one so you could have it in a day or so, Memphis may have it as well but I can't see their stock on hand.

Thank you Mike. Calling the local Cummins place to see if they have it in stock. One way or another the truck needs to be back in service for tomorrow.

Just to be clear, Item #10....people have different terms for parts and want to make sure that you get the right part..

Yep that's the one. It appears it comes with the standoff and bolt, which is good since the standoff was slightly damaged when the bearing let go. Weird thing is I heard no abnormal noise yesterday. Started it up this morning and heard a racket. Backed up 10 feet, stopped, popped the hood and saw a spark fly off the idler pulley. Shut it down to decide what to do. Should have got a flashlight and looked into it more closely. Instead I started it back up to pull back into its parking space to deal with it after work and boom the bearing let loose and the belt snapped. From the the discoloration to the races it is clear the bearing had overheated and I don't think it ran long enough this morning for that kind of heat to build up. Must have been going bad for a while and couldn't be heard over the engine noise.

The new idler pulley came in today for $42. It has a larger bearing than the original: 6303 vs 6203. Its 47mm OD x 14mm wide compared to the original pulley 40mm OD x 12 mm wide.
The original idler takes a 6203 bearing which I got at a local bearing place for $8 to get the truck back on the road. I’ll keep it as a spare once this new one goes on.

Thanks again Mike. I'm surprised Genos doesn't carry it.

It certainly looks like a product improvement. The part number superseded about 6 times so I figured there was more to it than different vendors...

Glad you could save the old one and will be able to use it for a spare if the need arises...
