i have the chance to buy a brand new 2002 ram 4x4 reg cab, cab&chassis with the mighty HO-CTD and 6-speed, but no bed of course... (a customer ordered it and has backed out, big discounts will be available to move it)

what would be the best to do then? put a bed on it (its a long chassis)

or some custom piece of work like a tow truck idea

or flat bed?

i hate to pass up a good deal

Are you thinking of having 2 trucks or just this one?

If having 2 then put a light flatbed on it, and take it to the track.

If one, then just put the bed on it.

Andrew

The chassis cab is longer and a regular bed will have a gap between it and the cab. You can custom build the solution to that, it would have to be a great deal for me as I really do not want a flatbed or a service body on mine. JMO, hope it helps.

tomeygun,

What would you like to put on it? You could do the earthroamer thing and put a custom camper on it. I have also seen someone who put a custom chassis machine shop on his, some really beautiful work in aluminum. A flatbed is a good basic and flexible utility, if it were me, I might start with that and go the panel body route, but I'd do it in hardwood, and turn it into a work of art. That is, in my abundantly available free time...

There's a lot more available now than when I built mine. Mine started out as a flatbed, then I built perminent sides that taper down at the back and mitered the bed corners like the wrecker beds. I cut off the back end of the frame behind the spring hangers so I could build a shorter bed. 5th wh towing was my objective. Check out alum-line.com. I hope that's it. They have some fabulous looking beds! They're lots of others now too. Is the cab and chassis a duallie? I wanted a C&C 3/4T in 97 but couldn't get it. I've had a 1T C&C before and liked the narrowed rear axle much better than the morphed looking 1T pickups. Craig

While down in Yuma, Az. , in Feb. I saw a Ford with an aftermarket bed on it that looked just like a regular factory, but had three doors into storage bins on each side. The inside of the bed was norrower to make more room for the storage areas. It was beautifully done, but did not learn who made it. I would love to have one, and have allready decided that should my bed get damaged it would find the maker and get one.

Like Andrew said, if you're going to keep your current truck and buy this one too, put a flatbed on it. If it is going to be you're only truck, I would hesitate on having just a flatbed, unless you have a need for one. You have to hold/strap eveything down or it will fly off going down the road.

Flatbeds look gooood. :D

Brian

Vaughn, I think I have seen the same bed on a ford that you did, and it is a dealer option. There is an F450 on the lot at home now with that bed on it, talk about nice!! Having storage in the sides of the bed that locks would be really nice.

A few ideas..........

What I did to help with hauling stuff on a flatbed is had a bedliner sprayed on it. It still will not haul loose stuff like a regular box bed, but anything with a few pounds of weight to it will ride nicely. Sack feed, cases of drinks, ice chest, etc. I also have raised side rails so it is easy to throw a strap across the bed to hold stuff at the front or tie light stoff down so it don't blow off. I went with this style bed for looks and functionality. In the front of it on the drivers side I have a hydraulic wheelchair box where I put my chair at when I get in my truck. Also being in a wheelchair limits me to being able to reach very far up in a regular bed. However, with the low sides I can load and unload most things myself.

Those picts that Andrew posted are sweet. I would go with a flat bed that has removeable sides as in a stack bed and a good head ache rack. This kind of set up is much more useful and versitile than a pickup bed. I have only seen this kind of thing custom made but some one must produce something similar.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking. Smatterfact, I sent that link to a friend of mine who just bought a CTD Cab/Chassis and needs to get a bed on it ASAP to get his tags.
