Is it possible to fool the ignition transponder so that I can use a regular key without the electronics in it? Anyone tried anything like that? Im not even sure how it works, but surely someone does. There's a fix for pretty much everything else.

well you do lose your security but some rental car companys actually cut the transponder off duplicate key then stash it it in the steering column. That way if the key got lost they can use a cheapy in the ignition. Probably don't do that anymore though

Seek out remote car starter systems. You need to do fool the system in just the way you are proposing to use a remote car starter.

I know there are two types of modules to do this:
-Some store a key in the vehicle so the stock system always sees it
-Other systems have an electronic module that mimic the key so you don't need to have a key buried somewhere.

Here is some info for a remote starter, and they have notes about the two different options for key "fooling"

I tried taping a Dodge key to the steering column trim on my '06 so I could use a duplicate key. Didn't work. The system was smarter than I was.

Buy a Sentry key and program it then cut away the rubber and plastic portion to dig the chip out. With the plastic cover of the steering column removed, position the chip inside the ring surrounding the ignition slug and check to see if a regular key will start it. It may take a couple times to find the sweet spot and then glue it in place.

I bought my key from Towbin Dodge off of eBay and tried this after reading about people doing this on a Jeep forum. It works like a charm and I love not having to use the remote key.

I do have it hidden inside the truck just in case the chip moves or malfunctions.

This is much better than having a key that looks like one for a gas station bathroom :-laf

Excellent

Looks like that fooler exactly what I've been looking for. I carry my keys on my belt and hate having to carry the huge key in my pocket. I just want a regular old key. I never use the keyless entry on my 99 (the fob is in my glove box). Simplicity is the "KEY" for me. (no pun intendid)

Thanks

Craig

That's a neat trick. Never thought about cutting the chip out of the big head key.

I personally wouldn't destroy the remote key since they cost so much. That is the reason I went with the $40 key from eBay instead.

The chip inside the Senrty key is easy enough to get out and it only takes a few minutes to glue it inside the steering column.

The best thing about this is that it's comforting knowing that if you loose your keys somewhere half way across the country that you can use the $3 hide a key that most of us have stashed somewhere instead of a very expensive call to a lock smith in the wee hours of the morning or a trip to the dealer when they open.

This is one of the first things I did to my truck when I bought it new and one of the cheapest and best mods I've done.

Haven't had a single issue with not being able to start the truck and never had a problem with my wife using her original remote key :D

As long as you have two original keys, the chip in the new key can be programmed using the steps in the owners manual and can be done without even getting the chipped key cut if you hold it next to the cheap key that you're gonna be using.

Another thing that anyone that does this mod should do is to put one of the original keys somewhere inside the truck just in case the chip gets dislodged somehow.
