Is it possible to re-key a new switch to the original key? For a 2nd gen truck. Or do I have to go with that new key? I think that my switch has finally given up. Cause it comes and goes, not sure about the wires along the steering shaft, not making the proper contact, or broken somewhere. Not sure of the hot start wires in that bundle either.
So help a brother out here.
Thanks for your response's.

Take both switches to a locksmith. They can do it.

I have done it on a motorcycle switch. It's a lot of tiny parts and tiny springs. You can do it if you're careful. Just take the "tumblers" out of the old one and put them in the new one.

You can swap lock cylinders. According to my 2001 manual you need to remove the lock cylinder before you remove the switch.

LOCK CYLINDER HOUSING REMOVAL
The ignition key must be in the key cylinder for
cylinder removal.
(1) Disconnect negative cable from battery.
(2) If equipped with tilt column, remove tilt lever
by turning it counterclockwise.
(3) Remove upper and lower covers (shrouds) from
steering column (Fig. 8).
(4) If equipped with automatic transmission, place
shifter in PARK position.
(5) A retaining pin (Fig. 9) is located at side of key
cylinder assembly.
(a) Rotate key to RUN position.
(b) Press in on retaining pin while pulling key
cylinder from ignition switch.

INSTALLATION
The ignition key must be in the key cylinder for
cylinder installation.
(1) Install the lock cylinder into the housing using
care to align the end of the lock cylinder with the
ignition switch.
(2) Push the lock cylinder in until it click

Is the key turning the switch all the time or some times?( If this is what is doing then your key is getting wore out and you need new key(s).
If it is turning all the time, I take it your stater is not engaging. That could be caused by neutral/clutch safety switch or a starter relay going ( now a days you can get relays rather cheap at auto part stores, a 4 prong 40 amp will work, you don't need the 5 prong one. I bought one Auto Zone for a very good price.)

These are all good ideas and suggestions and will consider them all.
Where s a good place to buy a new switch, dealer only?
Thanks
