Yes, Dan, leaning on a shovel all day is truly exhausting. I don't know how you can do it day after day. :D :D :D

As to the knowledge of the folks leaving TDR, it's a shame. But there is a place where their knowledge can be stored and referenced. I just looked at the FAQ (https://www.turbodieselregister.com/faq/) and discovered to my dismay that is is *still* nearly empty. Why? With all the knowledge and info available in this site, why does no one submit Qs and As?

How many members do we have on this site? How many are knowledgeable? How many are not so knowledgeable yet can recognize 'good stuff' when they see it? How many can write fairly clearly? I'd guess maybe 100.

The ones who share what they know likely haven't the time to convert their knowledge into a FAQ, which is fair enough. But how much time can it take for those who recognize 'good stuff' to roughly assemble that stuff and put it in a post? And how much time can it take for those who can write clearly to take the rough material and smooth it out?

If we had even 50 people who could assemble the 'raw material' doing so once a month, and another 50 refining that 'ore' once a month, the FAQ might have 500 additions per year.

Then, when newbies join, they can be 'instructed' to peruse the FAQ before asking the new-to-them-but-so-damn-old-to-us questions.

So, here's a request to have the 'FAQ Builder' forum created. Simple rules will apply there:
  • Each thread is to cover a different question being 'built' for the TDR FAQ.
  • FAQs are to be built on facts, not unsubstantiated opinion.
  • In the (hopefully rare) instance where there are great differences in opinion, those opinions should be summarized, written into the FAQ and clearly labeled as opposing opinions.

With the FB forum, when a member sees a thread that contains information that should be in a FAQ, he can (after checking to be sure no one else has done it already) create a thread in FB with the FAQ 'ore'. Other members can peruse the FB and when they find some unprocessed ore that catches their fancy, they can refine it as best they can. Finally, other members who are good with words can apply the finishing touches and ask that it be added to the FAQ.

As the FAQ becomes populated, a lot of these repetitive questions will no longer be asked.

Yeah, I know. It's a mousebrained scheme: "Which of us mice is gonna tie the bell on the cat?"

Dan, excellent post, well said.

As far as the FAQ thread, we do have a great search feature that taps into the knowlege base to bring info on whatever subject covered here. I would encourage the new people (and even some of the old timers) to try to use it before posting. The more you use it, the more you learn HOW to use it.

It really is an awesome site.
