Several weeks ago, I went to drive the new 3500, and I was very impressed. Although I hate the new cheap-a** plastic knob that controls the 4WD, the rest of the truck was pretty sweet.

So, I talk to the rep about ordering a SRW 3500 with absolutely everything, including a Jake brake...

They want $25K:--) PLUS my '99:-{} I don't think so!

So, I'm going to spend about 10K or less on mods, in order to blow everything else off the road. Already have jake brake and other stuff lined up - will probably incorporate a TST uprate package. Maybe a new clutch. The wife even says it's okay :D

BOMB'ing, here I come!

Don I know where your coming from. These trucks depreciate about $5 to $6K a year. Mines 3 years old and I've been offered $23K on a trade. I wanted a 2002 Red 3500RC HO 6 speed 4x4 SLT (shorter truck would fit in my garage). It listed for around $35K. They wanted my truck and $6K. If I bought the 2002, I would need to add a bed liner and bed rails and a CD player and upgraded the stereo. By the time I got done I would spend over $7K for the 6 speed HO and no back seat. Kinda like throwing $7K out the window. I could upgrade my auto to a DDT or ATS and bomb my engine and still have $3K in my pocket and a nicer faster truck. I think you have to really wear these trucks out before it is time to trade. Have fun with your bombing.

Trade ins

You really need to shop your trade. I shopped 4 different dealers; all within 45 minutes from home. I told the salesman I was going to order 03 4x4 loaded. Told him I only need to know 2 numbers; amount over invoice on the 03? How much for my trade? Also I made it very clear I was going to place an order within 2 days. I was offered 15K, 18. 7k, 20K, and 20K. All 4 dealers were willing to place an order for $500 over invoice.

I ended up getting my ordered truck for $300 over invoice and $20k for my 99 on trade. The dealer also let me remove all my add-ons from the 99. By the way, I paid $30,600 for the 99 in June 99.

Russ you did a good job on that deal. Your truck only cost you around $3000 a year in depreciation which is great. I saw an 03 like you have ordered at the truck stop where I fuel up. Nice looking truck. It was quieter but it still sounded like a Cummins :) . Now many miles did you have on your 99?

Check out Johnson Auto Plaza in Brighton, CO. They are quoting me numbers I'm pretty happy with - both the price on the new one and my '99 in trade. Talk to Kathy or Linda in the fleet department. I also found that these two ladies know their stuff a lot better than most salesmen I've talked to.

Dealer prices

Yeah, I'm sure that shopping around will reduce the investment, but even if I can trade for 20K, that's still double my investable $$ for BOMBing, which even includes new tires ($1K) and bodywork ($1k+) :D . With TLC, this'll last me another 10 years - by then, it will be a classic!
