I CAN'T BELIEVE IT ! ! !
The saga continues...
You might remember my truck got broken into.
I went to the dealer to find out their bodyshop can't fix the hole under the passenger door handle, or the chips in the paint, because they no longer have a body shop! ! !
Now, pissed off, I order the passenger door handle and a can of touch up paint to do it myself on my only day off.
I take off the door handle and straighten out the sheet metal, sand the now slightly rusted metal where the chips were at, and primer the area. I spray the area and low and behold, the d@mn paint isn't matching. #ad
Even after the parts guy had my VIN #... .
NOT ONLY THAT, stupid me for not checking at the dealer, I took the NEW handle out of the box to find out it is the DRIVERS SIDE the guy ordered #ad
#ad
#ad

Here is where you guys might be able to help.
The code on the touch up paint can (spray) is 04504066 and the paint brush bottle is 4504065... . Is this the right paint for a '01 white ram??????
I'll probably have to wait to get to the dealer tomorrow..... and you can bet you bottom I will have some words with the parts manager tomorrow as well #ad

Thanks for listening to me vent...
By the way in case you don't remember it was the WHITTIER DODGE dealer. I hope these guys dont have any stars, let alone *****.

Jesse.

I got touchup paint from the dealer with the exact same number on it as under my hood(driftwood)The difference is about the same as silver is to gray. The dealer told me it was due to sun fade on my old paint,4 years later it still looks like I used chrome paint on my dings,at least they're not rusting.

In the Fresno CA area we have a number of auto detailers that specialize in detailing little paint problem like this. I used to call from the office and they would show up self contained to the parked truck and do there thing. Just a 2 cents idea.

Dodge doesn't know paint from crayola IMO. Their touch up paint isn't even a distant match! Find a paint shop in your area and they will have a meter that will look at your paint and make a custom match. That's the only way you are going to get a close match.

I've had vehicles that have had paint scracted and chipped off before. I went through the same thing you are. The auto paint supplier has a machine they call a paint prophet. You give them a chip of your old paint and it analyzes it and figures the exact same formula for a color match. the real problem is, first, over here they have a minimum of one quart you have to buy, and they told me that most vehicles nowadays have a four coat system in order to match the paint, and that is, there's first the primer, then a base coat, then a color coat and last a clear coat on top of that. All in all it comes to over $100. 00 just to touch up a dink. And the other thing is you can't save the paint for future use, at least that's what they told me, because it has a very short shelf life. And that cost doesn't include renting the air compressor and other equipment. If you really want your truck to be perfect you might just have to find a shop who is expert at matching. I would have thought white would be an easy color to match, that's why I was tinking of purchasing a white or black vehicle because I figured I could just go to Wal Mart and find a can of something that would come close. Oh well...

White an easy color to match? YEAH RIGHT! I had a 98 Dakota that was damaged on delivery that I took anyhow because they said no problem fixing, after them dinking for a year trying to repair the door )very poor job at best, the paint still did not match, they ended trading in the truck at a huge loss to them because they would not just do what I asked and paint the bottom half of it driftwood. Oh well it got me on my way to the Cummins

Musclefixer,
Follow Sanger's advice . If you're happy with your "bodywork" and handle install, find a mobile spot painting service such as Colors on Parade . If not in Yaller Pages, call a good size used car dealer or another new car dealer or a paint supplier such as a parts house for a reference. If they are as good as the one's we use , you'll never know it was painted.
BTW, my middle age muscles need fixing. Is there a way to get back in shape without working out? #ad

illflem, I got some Driftwood touch up paint a couple of weeks ago and It's still silver. Not even close. You'd think after 4 years they'd get a little closer to Driftwood. Fortunate for me, the chips are low enough that you don't see them.

I had to do some repair to my truck and when I ordered the paint from the body shop supplier I gave them the paint code and they asked me wich shade, lighter or darker? I guess the paint can be a different shade depending what color went thru the paint system before your truck was painted?

That is one of the reasons I ordered Black... easy to match any area needing repair (i. e. , scratches, rock chips etc. ). On the other hand, it's A LOT easier to see when it's needed too. #ad
LOL

Anyway, white is very hard to match as there are many variations of this color. The metallics are also hard to match too... ESPECIALLY silver (or Light Driftwood).
