Ok i thought if you had a fully splined main shaft and upgraded 5th gear nut that you had no more worries. Well i either got lied to or the builder screwed up (BLUMENTHALS) i was told that it had a fully splined shaft and upgraded 5th gear nut but this morning crusing @ 70 it came off and the rest of my trip had to run in 4th i have had nothing but troble with BLUMENTHALS scince i took my truck to them 1st time they rebuilt my transmission 2nd time my transfer case 3rd time replaced the tail section of the transmission with the cast iron one and rear cover of the transfer case because they were cracked 4th time they replaced the transmission case due to a crack all the way down the side. I DO NOT abuse this truck 5th time the transfer case cracked again!!! i did not let them touch it this time. took it to another trans shop and had it rebuilt and the yoke was worn out so they replaced it. my thought is all that time and all that money i spent and it all probly could have been avoided with a new yoke :{ im just estimating here but i think i have put like $5200 in to this piece of junk combo and i am fed up with trans problems i hate seeing NV4500 241dld the two make me sick. I need some encoragement or i'm liable to move over into on comming traffic :( just kidding but i need some advice. i have decided to do the repair my self because it seems that the Professionals can't get it right dose any one have the instructions and should i go ahead a get a new nut from Piers or Standard transmission

I've purchased all my parts from Standard Transmission and had great luck with them. You have a few posibilities. The nut came off, the gear stripped on the spline (not likely with a fully splined shaft), or you stripped the inside of the fifth syncro (been known to happen). Either way it should be evident on the back of the case. Good luck.

If you're doing it yourself either Standard or Quad4x4.com. Quad4x4 has some nice kits with instuctional video on some.

You could have metal particles circulating in the oil, gears, bearings. The thrust plate at the back and the gear just in front of it have been known to wear out when the support from 5th gear is no longer there to keep the mainshaft stuff tight.

I have never had any trouble with my Std. Trans. stuff in my NV4500 or with my NV241HD, 133,000 miles on my Sickly 97 with up to 800 hp. Parts &/or workmanship could have been a problem for you; can't tell from here.

well joe i need to get the truck home tonight do you think i will wear the thrust plate out i drive ~ 60 miles to work the last 15 to 20 this morning was without 5th.

You should be OK for a short distance. One guy drove 700+ miles and roached the thrust plate and gear;some folks get away with more than others. It seems that the more I know, the less luck I have getting away with risky stuff :(

man i wished i had bit the bullet in the begining (and so dose the wife)

hind site is 20/20

any one with a 6sp want to trade??

joe i got it home and going to tear in to it this weekend i called BLUMENTHAL'S and they are going to give me a new nut and let me borrow a spanner wrench my question is once i get it apart do i need a special tool or something to press the gear back on or can i just use a dead blow hammer and 4x4 block to drive the gear on. all this will be done with the trans in the truck or at least i was hoping it could be.

also ever since i had the trans case replaced and the clutch installed i have had a growling noise when in netural with the clutch pedal released i think that is the bushing or somthing if i have to pull the trans i might as well do this fix my question is what is the best bushing to use or should i just call peter. and ask him

thanks for all of yal's help.

The gear will just slide on the shaft, no force necessary. You should be able to do it in the truck without problems. Remember to support the weight of the transmission if you have to remove the crossmember. Letting all that weight hang on the engine will probably break your turbo housing.

Mainshaft nut was tight..... like 250 ft lbs. IIRC. I had to borrow a friends Snap-on tq wrench, my Craftsman only goes to 150.
