I was at my Dr yesterday and they told me that they are now recommending a new , essentially booster shot, for Pneumonia...

http://www.longtermcarelink.net/article-2014-11-17.htm

Adults 65 years of age or older are at increased risk for pneumococcal disease. PCV13 [Prevnar 13®] is recommended for all adults 65 years of age or older," as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). [1]

If you are someone over the age of 65, or if you know someone who is over the age of 65, take note of this new recommendation and take action. People of the age of 50 and older have taken comfort in the already existing vaccinations to fight pneumonia for years, but as of August 13, 2014, an additional pneumococcal vaccine called Prevnar 13® (PCV13) is recommended for all seniors aged 65 and older.

This recommendation is made by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. "ACIP is chartered as a federal advisory committee to provide expert external advice and guidance to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on use of vaccines and related agents for the control of vaccine-preventable diseases in the civilian population of the United States."[2]
Here are a few highlights:

1. For adults aged 65 or older who have not had any previous pneumococcal vaccine or whose history of vaccinations is unknown, a dose of the vaccine called Prevnar 13® (13-valent conjugate) is recommended. Furthermore, physicians are advised to recommend a dose of Pneumovax (23-valent polysaccharide) for these patients six to 12 months after their PCV13 vaccination.

2. Another aspect of this new recommendation from the Advisory Committee states that if a patient 65 or older has received one or more doses of Pneumovax, but no previous Prevnar 13® vaccination, that patient should receive a dose of Prevnar 13® at least one year after administration of the most recent dose of Pneumovax. Prevnar 13® vaccination should be given six to 12 months before any additional dose of Pneumovax and at least five years after the most recent Pneumovax vaccination. Prevnar 13® is a product of Pfizer, Inc. and Pneumovax is a product of Merck.
Why the new recommendation?

Pfizer conducted a trial in the Netherlands among 85,000 participants aged 65 or older. Half of the group received the Prevnar 13® vaccination and the other half received a placebo. "In the vaccine group, about 45 percent fewer first episodes of vaccine-type community-acquired pneumonia were seen compared to the placebo group. Also, a 75 percent reduction in vaccine-type invasive pneumococcal disease was seen in the vaccine group compared with controls."[3] The staggering evidence from this study that is demonstrating how Prevnar 13® decreases risk of serious illness propelled the decision of the ACIP to recommend Prevnar 13® for all adults aged 65 and older.
How does this new recommendation fit into your Medicare coverage?

Well, in an ideal world, patients would receive both the Prevnar 13® and Pneumovax "vaccines separated by six months to a year to retain the initial vaccine's efficacy. But currently, Medicare only pays for one dose of pneumococcal vaccine for patients older than 65."[4]

Medicare will have to take into account the new recommendation and possibly allow for two pneumococcal vaccines for adults over the age of 65, but Medicare is not able to possibly take it into account until at least early 2016, according to a Medicare representative who had been present at the ACIP meeting. If someone over 65 is still carried under traditional insurance instead of being enrolled in Medicare, that second pneumococcal vaccine is typically more easily covered since traditional insurers are required to adhere to ACIP guidelines in a much shorter time frame than Medicare.

Elderly patients are about 3 times more likely over the age of 65 to acquire community-acquired pneumonia than those aged 50-64 and the prevalence rate aged 50-64 is 25 in 100,000. After the age of 65, that number jumps to 70 in 100,000. If you yourself have not already suffered from pneumonia at some point in your life, you probably know someone who has. It can be very serious, cause hospitalization, and possibly be fatal. Pneumococcal pneumonia is an illness caused by the type of bacteria called Streptococcus pneumonia and can be "carried in the throats of up to 70% of healthy people."[5]

"Most pneumococcal deaths in the U.S. are in adults. Yet about 70 million adults at highest risk remain unvaccinated, leaving them vulnerable. If you are at risk, vaccination is the safest, most effective way to protect yourself."[6] If you are unsure whether or not you have been vaccinated for pneumonia or are eligible to be vaccinated for pneumonia under this new recommendation for Prevnar 13®, seek advice from your healthcare professional, take heart that there is something more you can do to protect yourself, and take action.

I just got my shot yesterday at my DR's office also. I go every 6 months for my recheck ever since 9/11/01; when I had my double bypass surgery done doc wants me to have the oil and filters change just like the truck.

Medicare will pay for this shot along with the annual flu shot and shingles vaccination. Since this was my first visit to my doctor after turning 65; Medicare does a complete physical with an EKG and a full work-up.

I had Blue Cross and Blue Shield HMO before so I am in good health still.

I had pneumonia years ago. You don't want it. I lost 14# and went through two antibiotics before it was cured. I turn 65 in January and plan a tune up. Just had catheter ablation surgery for A-Fib which has worked pretty well. A cat scan w/contrast detected extensive calcification of the arterial walls. That's it for the dead red I guess. The fat got in their despite stellar cholesterol readings and statins. My wife and I get the flu shot yearly and luckily haven't had a sniffle in over five years.
The popularity of the vaccine alarmists has led to the resurgence of preventable childhood diseases. My father got pertussis and coughed for a whole year.

Never had the Pneumonia shot and WONT, I had the flu shot 3 times in my Military career they gave it to you want it or not. I spent 4 years in and IT WORKED GREAT!! The 3 years that I had the flu shot. I CAME DOWN WITH THE FLU 2 of those times they put me in the Hospital because I was so sick. The 4th year I was DOS at the same time that the Punch cards were distributed and I skated thru without getting the flu shot. I DIDN'T GET THE FLU!! and have only been sick with it a few times in the past 40 years since and that was when our Children were in school and bringing crap home from all the other snot lickers. And I didn't have an immune system that was tolerant of such things.

I have been asked every year about getting a flu shot both where I worked for free and at the Hospital and I have declined each offer. The wife gets the flu shot and they seem to work pretty well for her, she gets sick every year!!.

Last time I went to the Hospital ( a few weeks ago) I talked to the Dr. about this Pneumonia shot. He said off the record Gail stay away from it!! your healthy and not at risk. He gave me a list of reasons why. One of which was I don't have any other Medical issues that if I did get Pneumonia it could be bad. I trust him and im not going to take something that the body has no need for like antibiotics, Good if you really need them, BAD if you are like most that think every time you are under the weather they run for the bottle of antibiotics, that's what God gave us an immune system for!!

Since Cut & Paste info seems so popular!!

It's so important to understand that, overall, your best defense against any disease is a robust immune system. Vaccines can actually compromise healthy immune function and this is true, regardless of your age. Two of the most important factors influencing the health of your immune system are:
•Your gut flora, and
•Your vitamin D status

About 80 percent of your immune system resides in your gut, so maintaining a healthy gut flora is imperative for a fully functioning immune system. Also, if your child's gut is populated with too many pathogens, he or she is likely to be more prone to vaccine damage. For more information about this, I highly recommend listening to my interview with Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride.

Vitamin D is another crucial component for maintaining optimal health, so I urge you to get your children's vitamin D levels tested, and, if found deficient, to follow my recommendations for optimizing their levels.

Artificially manipulating your immune system with a vaccine does not produce the same kind of immunity and sought after disease-fighting results that a healthy lifestyle can. It may actually make you less healthy in the long run. For more information, the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) is a good place to start to do research and obtain information that you need to make intelligent, informed decisions about vaccination.

I find it funny that the Pharmaceutical Companies are the ones telling everyone THEY NEED A SHOT!! do you really believe they have your best interests in mind? or is it the fact that Doctors might get a kick back from them to promote their products and boost profit margins for them? No THAT NEVER HAPPENS DOES IT:rolleyes:

The second Paragraph says that 80% of your immune system is in your belly. Eat some more processed CRAP and that cut's it down to about 20% so what you eat compromises your ability to fend off the little buggers that make you sick. Bottom line is EAT HEALTHY!! and get some EXERCISE!!

OR BETTER LIFE THROUGH CHEMISTRY!!!

It is impossible to create a 'flu' shot for each season.

What they do give you is a touch of LAST YEARS flu. Does that make any sense to you?? If so I am selling a cubic inch doubling kit for all diesels, call me for the introductory prices.

The best immune system is one that is not fooled with.
I was forced to get the swine flu shot back in 1977? and was sicker that a dog for 3 long days.
It worked though, I never did get another flu shot ever!

Who knows

I have to side with Big’ and Jack Evans on this. I’ve had the bad (BAD) flu three times in my life and at my age I’m not sure if I could survive it again. I often wonder; just what were they pumping into us prior to deployment to SEA in the late 60s’? I plan on calling my AME in reference Hamms’ post…it may be good advice.
By the way…” Happy New Year,” everyone!

I was in Tactical Air Command. Their Motto was anywhere anyplace within 24 hrs. My shot RECORDS look like the yellow pages from any LARGE metropolitan area. I had always kept my Shot Records. Good thing that I did, lots of those shots are Life Time Shots. Some of them you really don't want again because they could cause some problems if given to you a second time. I especially liked the one that they gave you in the XXX and it felt like they injected a golf ball under the skin for a week or two!!! Ya I think that was to see if you could endure pain and had NOTHING to do with keeping you well.

You can get a copy thru the VA if you desire, Most that don't have theirs or know what they had been given can tell the DR's what years of your enlistment and they can pretty much tell you what you were given.
