Anybody out there has experience in importing a Canadian CTD to the States? What's involved, how long does it take, pros/cons?

I have a 1996 to sell and some canadian owners told me that lots of the used CTD here get sold to the States.

Thanks! Dan

Dan,

You might want to look into the warranty. Look at the "written warranty" that comes with the vehicle, not what "someone" tells you. I've heard that after the 1st of the year DC will only warranty vehicles made to be operated in the USA. There is one used car lot, here in Anchorage, selling 02 and 03 Dodge Trucks from Canada with no "DC factory warranty". They do offer a warranty but it's only good at an independant shop. Kinda spooky!

Yep Heard The Same Thing

Phil, I heard the same thing. I was talking to Roy at Anchorage Chrysler and he told me that after 1 Jan people will have to start paying for their warranty work up front if it's a Canadian vehicle and your not Canadian. Something about warranty money one is from Detroit and the other comes from Chrysler, LTD so you would have to try and get reimbursed from Chrysler, LTD for your warranty repairs.

Also on another note the dealer here is illegal in selling his Dodge's, GM's and Ford's as they are not 6 months old (from sale)or 12,000 to begin with. That is a Federal Reg requirement. Alot of dealers are doing this because they buy them cheaper there and sell them for more here.

Taking your truck to Joe's repair shop doesn't seem like a good option for all the money you spend on these vehicles. Might have more problems than you started out with.

What the others said. One other thing tho. I almost bought a Canadan 3500 here in Fairbanks. Thing that I noticed was that the headlights didn't work properly. Canada has a requirement to have daytime running lights and the US doesn't. When they put the U. S. dash in the headlight wires don't work properly. On that one I was looking at when you turned on the high beams when they would flash on but they would not stay on and when they did I couldn't get the low beams to come on when you turned the highs off unless you turned the truck off and restarted with the lows on. That was the tip off that it was a Canadan truck. The dealer told me then and there that they did not have to do warr work and they wouldn't. Hope this helps.

pcarlson,

The "other" used car dealer here is spooky. I looked there before I bought my 2002 from Anchorage Chrysler. When I asked about the "warranty" they sure began to dance. They said they had a "local" shop do all their warranty work. It was like pulling teeth trying to get a straight answer on the warranability issue. I'll bet they have a good a good waiver to sign for people who buy there. Buyer Beware!

Besides I've nothing but good service out of Anchorage Chrysler.

Not sure about warranty stuff, sounds like the dealers are full crap to me, made by Dodge should be warrantied by Dodge! truck doesn't know where it is on the globe? The head light stuff is a minor thing. The easiest thing to get the CAN trucks to operate like a US truck is just to replace the dash panel (face plate) this way you will have the mph/kmh and PSI etc. in the USA place. If you don't want the DRL's they can be easily unplugged and a jumper installed to make the High Beam indicator to work correctly. Sounds like that dealer was trying to pull a fast one, but not fast enough for a TDR member. Oh, and other thing to make the CAN trucks operate like a US, you have to take the EH! out and put in a YAWl ! in. :D

Cheer's, Merry Christmas to Every One.

You guys are right for the $$$. From what I read on the TDR the new vehicules (eg the 2003 I just bought) are 20% cheaper (before tax, 15%) in Canada. That for sure creates a "market of upportunities", just like for cigarettes and alcohols. But you're left alone with the product you bought on that "grey" market.

I was born in a border town, I know what that is. Man, whisky made in Valleyfield Qc was 1/2 cheaper in Burlington, Vt than in ... Valleyfield. All fictive cities, and liquid, of course :D

But beside that, what about used vehicules no longer on any kind of warranty? A Canadian Ram is a Ram w/ daylight beams and that's it? eh!

I read on a US government site that only Registered Importers are allowed to move vehicules through the border. You'd better check if your Husky was imported that way unless you don't intend to plate it. ;)

Is is worth trying to change the eh! (in fact here in Qc it's more lah than eh) to yawl? And sell my canadian 96 to a US citizen?

Thanks all yawl, eh, là (lah)! Dan

Tardog,

Good one! LOL! :D :D Actually I heard that your countrys name was spelled with only 3 letters. CND. Everyone just said EH after each one. . :D :D
