Absolutely, I know firsthand how quiet and cool a Milemarker winch runs on the long haul. When measured with appropiate temperature measuring devices, the power steering pump actually runs several degrees COOLER while winching than not winching. If these winches are good enough for the U. S. Army, they are good enough for me. For recovery, I would not trade mine for TWO quality electric winches!

I agree 110% on any hydrolic winch, top notch and a deffinate powerhouse, throw the electric away JMO, and now it sounds as if Milemarker has upped the bar! this price is great, with the Milemarker you use your pump and this cuts initial costs.

Me personally my truck is for the road and towing and if I get off road than I will kick my own buttocks, but if It were for off road use than I would also have the MILEMARKER ! trust me I have used alot of winches in my time and hydrolic makes all the others look like dinasours... ... ... ... ..... What exactly did you get for $2000?! I bought my complete set up (MM 12k) for $860 and I'm thinking of getting a MM 10. 5K in the next week or so for $700... . both of these units come as complete kits with everything you need, to include the adapter to run off the PS pump.

But the Army does hammer their stuff, and it certainly takes the abuse. I see quite a lot of stuff loaded on my airplanes, and it amazes me what I see sometimes.

it also had to do with the number of electrics that had to be rebuilt because they would just run the winches until they blew... Not a problem with the hydros

I've been back and forth from electric to hydro and still can't decided. My thoughts are that if I get in water deep enough where the motor is ready to pull in water im gonna shut it down to prevent further damage. In that situation and electric winch would be better. But as you all have said already, with how heavy our trucks are, a hydro has all the power in the world. hmmmmmmm

In my very limited experience you will burn up the winch before you drain two large battery's with the alternator charging.

My brother installed a front receiver hitch on his truck and a receiver mount for his winch, he installed electric connections in the front and rear bumpers so he can winch forward or backward. He also built a receiver mount for his car trailer so he can use the same winch to load cars.

This is probably a slight oversimplification. Without seeing the specification that was written, it is hard to know what the requirements were.



Having done contracting for govt money (and officially part of the problem), you can (with a well-written spec) make purchases meet your specific needs. As an example for the milemarker winch, if the requirement was a duty cycle that could not be met by an electric winch, the hydraulic one would have to be the choice. The package is the item bid one, not individual items.



I am not saying the system is perfect, by any means, but it is hard to evaluate objectively.
