Has anyone ever tried to re-ring their 12v without removing the block from the truck? I have a 98 12v that smokes when warming up and when accelerated hard. I was going to pull the head and see if the cylinders did not have much taper and not much ridge I thought about just ball honing and re-ring it with a valve job. number 5 & 6 look close to the firewall, so these pistons might be tricky to remove.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,

Yes, it can be done. Like said 5-6 are no fun. The only thing that really is fun is cutting the ball hone stem the right length. As for taper these blocks are hard. So I don't think that will be a problem.

Unlike big truck engines, the B block isn't so heavy, in the 240-260 lb range depending on which one. Take it out so you can clean out all the grit thoroughly.

At 800k there was still cross hatch at the top of the cylinder walls and no ridge in my engine. However, the taper required a .020 bore. I can only imagine the difficulty of trying to R & R the pistons and honing the cylinders with the engine still in the truck.
