Hey guys & gals,

I am making shure that i'm right in my thoughts. . that you convert inch lbs to Ft lbs by dividing by 12. . so 72in lb = 6 Ft lbs and then if you are using a 6" wrench then you multiply the torque by 2 to = 12 ft lbs and is equivalent to a 1 ft lever at 6 ft lbs. i. e. the same force at the fastener itself

What are your opinions?

Thanks,

Mack Daddy

A 12 pound force on a 6" wrench is equivalent to a 6 pound force on a 12" wrench - both equal 72 inch-pounds, or 6 foot-pounds. If you are using a torque wrench, however, the length of the handle doesn't matter - the readout scale is already calibrated to take that into account. If the fastener calls for 72 inch-pounds, torque it to that figure; don't accidently double it and twist the fastener off just because the torque wrench handle is shorter or longer than 1 foot. The only exception would be if you were using a 6" offset crows-foot wrench (or similar offset wrench) instead of a socket on the output of the torque wrench. In that case, a much more complex set of calculations would be involved.

Can I take a guess that you are wondering about the torque value on the transmission bands? I've read here that people have snapped the bolt torquing it to 72 ft lbs when it is 72 inch lbs.

Just a guess.

Yes, i was servicing the trans last nite. . My in lb wrench was in my shop toolbox 30 miles away, and the local auto store was out of torque wrenches to buy or loan. as a mechanic for a long time, I've gotten a feel for what what feels right torque wise with my tools, and had to do it by feel with a 5. 5-6 inch long 1/4 combo wrench. either way, 6 -12 ft lbs is not much. . lol

I do remember a member doing them to 72 ft lbs. . I had posted a reply stating that nope, its 72 inch lbs. . I hope his trans lived. .
