Well, I need to ask some questions about turbos and their names.

1. Hy and Hx turbos. which one is which and which is better?

2. 30,35,40, 55, What do these numbers represent?

3. H2E, from what I have read this is commonly used in twins, what is it from?

4. 9 cm, 16 cm exhaust housing. Is bigger better? or Smaller faster? How do you decide?

5. Saw 2 turbos today with a Cummins tag on each them one had model T-50 and the other ST-50, are these good or bad?

Thank you

Brian

I’ll try question #1 and leave the rest to the experts. The HY35 comes with the autos after 2000 models. It has a smaller turbine but spools up fast. Good for less smoke. The HX35 comes with 5 and 6 speeds. Delivers more air, but not quite as quick as an HY35, unless it’s modified (by Piers).

HX Turbos are the relatively new generation units with a dual scroll turbine housing. HY turbos are newer, and have a single scroll turbine housing. The HY also has a different Center Rotating Housing Assembly

this is a designatuon holset has given the turbo to represent the "size" of the turbo... larger number, larger turbo

3. H2E, from what I have read this is commonly used in twins, what is it from?

Not all that common it is a little small for a twin system pushing over 500 HP

4. 9 cm, 16 cm exhaust housing. Is bigger better? or Smaller faster? How do you decide?

9cm is off the HY35 from the automatics. It spools relatively quickly, but the turbo as a whole is to small to support over 300 HP in stock trim.

16cm relates to a dual scroll housing and is non wastgated on the HX35, but wastgated on the HX40. Spool up with this housing is slower than the HY when used on a HX35 turbo.

as for the Question "what is better" that is relative to the power level of the engine the turbo is used on.

5. Saw 2 turbos today with a Cummins tag on each them one had model T-50 and the other ST-50, are these good or bad?

Not a clue on this one, sound like Garrett Turbos!

Thank you

These are older turbos, normally used on the Cummins 855 CID engines. The Holset turbos are much more durable, more responsive and better looking.
