Today after setting for two weeks I drove 5 miles to town. Found a parking stall with a small maybe 5% slope away from front bumper and placed the truck in neutral then park. All of a sudden I noticed I was slowly moving forward with a clicking feeling.

Drove home and tried it on a forward and reversing slope with the same results.

Truck is my 01 Sport 4x4 auto with 175k in original trans. Trans shifts like new.

Tell me it’s an easy fix!!!

Adjustment of the shifter cable can be off, so moving the lever to P doesn't fully engage the parking pawl.
Check that first.

Let's see if it is that easy, I hope for the best.
The mechanism inside the Trans is pretty simple and straight forward, but just slightly out of adjustment throws it off.

I recommend to check YouTube for the how to, it's pretty straight forward and easily done.
Shouldn't take you longer then a couple minutes to do it.

my wife always complains that I use the parking brake. all the time.
on inclines set the parking brake while in neutral with foot on brake
then release brake and see if it rollls.
if it still tries to roll set the parking brake harder, try again and then shift to park.

Although I use mine a lot due to parking on grades and a habit from owing a lot of MT vehicles... It takes just one set of frozen parking brake cables to break that habit.

I developed the Parking Brake habit from driving air brake equipped vehicles and knowing that the Parking Brake Pawl is a very weak feature for holding a parked vehicle on a incline. whereas the recommendation is to use the parking brake when parked.. not too mention if using Park only on a incline, it can be difficult to get the vehicle out of Park once it settles afterwards.

reality is the parking brake removes stresses from the drivetrain components when used. but hardly anyone does.. as 12V98 just found out why its nice to use on a incline.

Personally, I will never trust a parking brake alone on an incline again. The parking brake on my ‘95 5-speed popped off on me twice before I quit trusting them. The first time was no big deal, it wasn’t a steep incline and it rolled a foot into a parking lot barrier. The second time, it was parked in my driveway, pretty steep. I had started it on a Sunday morning to turn the A/C on and when I was about 6’ away I heard it pop. I got the door open, grabbed the steering wheel and pulled myself in just in time to stop it from running through my shed.

You have just confirmed one of my fears regarding a park brake on an aging truck. For the past several years I keep a wheel chock in the truck and use it (along with the park brake) any time that I park the truck with the engine running on any incline.

Just yesterday I was on the steepest part of my driveway and decided to set the park brake in the name of safety. Pushed the pedal, opened the door, and as my feet hit the ground I heard a loud pop and bang. The equalizer/adjuster under the cab broke where it holds the front cable.

New England winter roads have not been kind to my '03. The frame has rotted, the rear wheel openings are gone, and the rockers aren't far behind. Also noticed yesterday that the 2 hanger clamps on my MBRP exhaust are gone after the bands rotted.

My wife used to do that, but now I’ve got her (and the kids trained) to put the trans in N, parking brake, release brake pressure, if it’s stays still then put the trans in park.
