Well folks, I'm now getting ready to install the guages. Now my question is what order do you find that they work best, or would you have your guages installed and why?

Thanks, I searched and wasn't able to find any other real information on this subject.

It's all up to the individual. I mounted my EGT guage where it was most visible to me, as I consider it the most valuable info.

I agree with Don, it's personal choice. I have mine in a 3 gauge pod. Boost on the bottom, pyro in the middle, and trans temp on top. One thing - I put the boost on the bottom to be closest to the pillar access hole (in the back) so the tube wouldn't have to make any more bends than it had to - to avoid kinking it.

Gauges

Fireman Dave:

I have three gauges and post mount ordered for my 2001 Ram. I'm getting them from Autometer. I received the Gauges, and found out the exhaust temp gauge didn't include the heat probe, so had to reorder, which cost more than the gauge. I would like to know if you installed them yourself, and how difficult it was.

Thanks:

I got my gauges from Diesel Injection Service out of Lubbock, TX. Everything I needed came with them (except for a couple of additional pipe fittings that made it a little easier - easy to pick up at the hardware store). Anyway, I got some help with the pyro from some fellow TDR members. I did the boost and trans temp gauges myself - with some advice help from fellow TDR members. :D It wasn't very difficult to do any of them - but the help of some guys that had done them before made it a lot easier. If you have any guys in your area (and I know there are), you might want to get a little bombing session together. I've been involved in these kinds of bombing sessions several times this year. It's always fun to get together with the guys and alter things. We have a group of over 40 of us from WI, MN, NW IA, and IL that get together occasionally for just such events. Usually the bombing sessions are 10 guys or less - whoever can make it. Maybe we could get something going in southern WI sometime. We like to tinker on other guys' trucks as well as our own. A few weeks back, 3 of us did our exhausts together at a member's house in Kenosha. Email me if you would like more info on our group.

The guages are a bit of a pain but that's ok, believe it or not the biggest pain is routing the wires from the pod to the under dash(Fishing)... ... . Make all the + and - wires for the lights the same length and connect them together add the + wire to the trans temp guage then tape them to the EGT wires(it's stiff) and use it to fish them down through the dash. Pull the dash cluster cover off and take out the headlight switch and find the wire(via test light) for the dimmer and tap into it, then use the cig lighter light wire for the trans temp guage(+12v on key). The boost ,egt and trans temp are simple for the rest of the install.

Thanks guys,

I may also mount the boost guage down at the bottom. I ended up getting 2 different gauge series. 2 of the 3 are Autometer Phantom and the boost guage is Autolite (autometer).

One last question, any suggestions on where to mount the trans temp probe? I really didn't want to drop the pan, but will if I have to.

Thanks,

Corey

Best place to mount the trans temp is to install an earlier (1995) trans line, already has the port there for you. You can get these lines through DTT and others. That's how I did mine.

As to your first question, mine are located like Fireman Daves. I felt this was best, trans temp and egt most important when towing .

I just finished installing Autometer Ultra Lites last week-end. I installed them by replacing the stock A-piller with the autometer gauge A-piller. (All from Genos). The oil gauge went on top followed by the Pyro and the Boost on the bottom. I used the turbo boost fitting from Piers Diesel (www.piersdiesel.com) which replaces a bolt on the intake manifold. This took about 5 minutes to install and hook up boost fitting. (No drilling at all). I practiced tapping a couple pieces of metal before doing the pyro pre-turbo installation. It turned out being very simple.

I have never done any installation like this before but used the vast amount of information that is available on the TDR website. I took everything slow and planned the whole installation before I started. Everything turned out sweet.

I find that I am using my gauges to driving differently than I did before. The article in the current issue of the TDR magazine is very helpful in showing you how to use your gauges effectively.

I would definitely advise you to do the installation yourself. You get a great sense of accomplishment when you are finished.

A piller mount with Autometer Z series. Top - Trans Temp, Middle - Boost, Bottom - EGT. I like this set up, but I could also live with the Boost and EGT trading places. Hope this helps, -Ken

transmission probe

You can also order a block from Janetty racing, that's what I did. it goes on the hot cooler line with compression fittings. Easy, works great and a lot cheeper than a new line. Plus you hardly loose any transmission fluid. I installed mine on the vertical part of the line just under the cooler.

As for the order top to bottom temp, egt. boost on A pillar.
