When you go to start your truck, how low does the volt meter drop during the starting? Mine drops to what I can figure to be around 9 volts. I have always thought, since I bought the truck, that it takes a couple of seconds longer to start it. It sounds like it is straining. This morning I looked at the batteries and the date punched into them is a 3, a 0 and SP. I am assuming this means September, 3rd, 2000. These are a pair of Interstate batteries and each are rated at 750 CCA. It has always started, it just appears to be strained.

The only way to know is a load test. Most battery shops will test for free. I replaced my original batteries after 11 years. Same story -- it was taking longer to start and then wouldn't start when it was cold. It only takes one bad battery. A shop will have a battery terminal puller to test the batteries separately. That's easier than trying to disconnect the batteries at home.

I never noticed before, so took a look today. The voltmeter drops about a needle width when the starter engages. Besides the batteries, worn starter contacts could be the problem.

Thank you gentleman. I had the batteries load tested and they did not fair so well. Replaced the batteries this morning. Starts great now. Thanks again for the help.
