2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Factory stereo swap = Plug & Play

I sould know this but I just can't seem to figure it out, and can't find it in any old posts. I am replacing the Infinity in my 02 and the speakers. Is there a way to make it work w/ factory wiring? I was thinking for some reason only the fronts are amped, but I get no sound from the factory rears with my Sony installed. I DO NOT want to hook up the factory amp, I already know how to do that but it wouldn't help b/c I'm replacing the door speakers any way. So does any one know of a trick in the dash wiring, ar can you tell me the speaker color codes of the 02 so I can try to by-pass the amp before I go to the hassel of running all new wire? Thanks!

Just a thought,

because the factory installation had the amp right at the speaker location, the factory wiring from the radio to the amp is only a low level (read low power) line.

Even if you find the wires, check to see that they will handle the power levels required for higher amplifier output. If I were adding the wires, i'd make them at least #16 or larger wire.

Rog

From all my buddies that install stereos... The dodge infinity systems are a pita. You must use the factory wiring along with the infinity amplifier or use a seperate amp along with all new wire. I'd just use the factory amp. With the right amount of tweaking it sounds awsome. Id put my 150 dollar pioneer headunit, 63 dollar pioneer sub, 170 dollar audio bahn sub amp using the factory wires and speakers (except sub of course) up against any truck with any type/brand of stereo any day. If you opt to not use the factory stuff your in for quite a project.

I got it (with some help from an old diagram posted by Hollywud). Yes it can be done. You have to jump a few wires in the front doors. All other wire is factory. I'm not worried about the guage b/c it's just a high pwr head unit, no external amp. And for referance... it's not good to amplify an already amplified signal. Adding an amp to todays high pwr head units will eventually lead to some sort of failur. The thing that got me is I was looking at the wire at the factory 6x9 and none of the color matched my diagrams. If you look back in the door behind the plug there is where you find all the right colors. If any one needs help just let me know maybe I can help. Thanks.

You can do it w/o cutting any thing just in case you want to put it back to stock. Take out the front speakers and jump a few wires on the harness, install new door speakers and rock out. I bought new rear door speakers too but after seeing the quality of the stock Infinity rears I decided to try them out.

MrDiesel

Do you have detailed rundown of what wires to jump?

I have a '98 QC w/ the Infinity system.

Just received an Alpine and aftermarket front & rear speakers I planning on swapping out.

I plan on using only the new aftermarket stuff and bypass all the original Infinity stuff - sounds like it would be mch easier if I could utilize some of the existing speaker wiring instead of running new.

Thanks.

the wires behind the dash are fine... used an a after market to factory harness adaptor ,,,not cutting any of the factory harness, follow the color codes (white ,white with back stripe,lt front speaker)(gray and gray w black stripe ,rt front ) green with backe stripe lt rear ) purple with black stripe rt rear )this is all after market radio standerd color codes ,,,, you will have a set of wires going in to the amp and a set out from the amp used the ones going in to the amp to power the new aftermarket speaker as long as you used the one before the amp you will bypass the factory system

other color codes

yellow ,,costance power

red ,, switched power key

black ,, ground

blue ,,, amp turn on

blue w/white stripe,,, power antenna

orange ,,, dimmer wire

hope it helps

TGroves,

Thanks.

Didn't have a chance to take the door panels off today - ran a few erands, installed the head unit, and re-did some of the wiring for the alarm module that I had installed a few weeks ago; this guys were not the most organized or detailed oriented.

As you mentioned I had ordered a harness adaptor from Crutchfield's - gravy and appears like a normal setup from that end.

The rear factory speakers - were they powered by the factory head unit or were they piggy backed off the amps on the Infinity 6x9's?

I'm assuming they were powered off the head unit; otherwise I'd have to run new wires if I bypassed the front original wiring. Yes?

Why are you guys changing the infinityspeakers?

Infinity has been one of the High End car speakers for Years and I think my infinitysystem sounds great.

If you need more, add a sub with an exernal amp.

If you need to get eardamage add an external amp(you need to rewire) to the infinity speakers and a sub.

If you want a "pimp my ride" system... ... . thats another question.

I´m not saying that the infinity is the best you can get, but you need to spend a lot of money to get something thats better.

OWeigel,

Nothing personal against Infinity.

Just want to upgrade from deteriorated paper cones that are fading in and out.

If you want a "pimp my ride" system... ... . thats another question.

BTW:

I'm 41 yrs old and listen to AM talk radio 85% of the time, please do not patronize.

Best.

Nothing personal at all. just wondering why change out somethings that sounds good from the beginning, but i know what you mean with deteriorated... :{

I´m not patronizing at all. I´m a 34 yr old soundengineer and don´t want any music at all in my cab. :D

It's not that simple... the colors change at the front door speakers. If you are bypassing the factory amps and you want sound from your rears you need to jump some wires. Drivers: white/Violet to brown/Yellow, white/green to Brown/Lt. Blue... Pass. : Tan/Violet to Dk. Bleu/White, Tan/Black to Dk. Blue/Orange. This is b/c the rear speakers are wired through the factory amps mounted to the front door speakers. MAKE SURE you are looking at the harness BEFORE the pluf for the speaker... after the the plug the wires change color again! NOTE..... this is a for sure on my 02, I don't know about other years. Also note: Just b/c you have a 6-speaker system does not mean it has the infinity amps. If your head has 3 plugs (2 big, 1-black, 1-gray AND 1 small 2-wire plug) you have the true high end Infinity. If you wire up a new head and don't connect that small 2-wire plug you will get no sound at all. AGAIN... this is my 02 for sure, don't know about every year.

The Infinity system is good, but almost all aftermarket head units these days are better. Would I go out and dump $500+ just for "better"? Probably not. But I used to be in the car audio biz years ago and I have connections to get nice stuff at great prices. I added a decent Sony head and some Sony speakers, and an MTX Thunder Form box under the rear seat. If you think the Infinity system is great you should hear mine. It doesn't compare. There is also another reason some people might choose to switch, that's to play CD-Rs. Depending on what year you have some for the factory heads won't play your home burnt CDs... .

Louder is not always better!

90% of what the carsoundbuisness says is pure BS.

They dont know what a flat frequencyresponse is and they think louder is better... .

Ok I guess the MTX thunderwhatever plays a lot more base than the infinity and the sony probably is alot more briliant, but flat?? I dont think so

The infinity sounds pretty flat, with a tad of too much base. But with a deleted muffler it doesn´t matter. :-laf

You shure can upgrade it but then you need to do some serious constructionwork in the doors or infront of them, build a sub, ad amps, make some equalisation and delayadjustment and turn the rattle off. ;)

What I was trying to say in the first post was that you can do pretty much with the stockspeakers.

AND the infinitysystem are the speakers only. I´ve never said anything about changing the headunit.

And please no war on this one!

No war, and you wanna bash the auto sound biz and tell me 90% of it's BS... interesting. I certianly didn't imply that louder is always better, and yes the stock Infinity probably is fairly flat. Maybe that's why I don't like it that much. Have you ever sat in a car or truck with a perfectly flat response? I have and I don't like it. Sure you might win sound offs, but it's not what I listen to daily. To each his own. This post was about changing the speakers AND the head unit from the start.

MrDiesel,

Mine's a '98 - I realize your's is an 02, but see if you can provide asssistance or anyone else.

Below are pics of my wiring - colors are different and as mentioned they change three times.

OBJECTIVE: Install Alpine head unit w/ aftermarket speakers and utilize factory speaker wire.

APPLICATION: '98 Ram QC (supposed Infinity)

Stock setup = Dodge HU w/ cassette & CD, 6 speaker (pillar tweeters, 6x9's w/ amps attached and 6 wires going to 6x9's, rear speakers in suicide doors, two large plugs at HU; one grey & one black)

Here's the factory dash connections w/ the pigtails attached from Crutchfields:

Here's the wiring for the 6x9's (top are wires before speaker plug, below is speaker wiring):

Colors:

Green

Black/Violet

Yellow/Red

Brown/Red

Black/Red

Yellow/Black

#ad

BONUS - anyone know what this wire and black plug is for (behind plastic in door)?

I'd appreciate any help that can be provided - I'm FAR from a professional and know just enough to get in trouble and give myself a headache.

That's the drivers side.

Here's the e-mail I rec'd from Crutchfield.

Amplifier Bypass Instructions

Left Amplifier (wiring should be done at amp location) FUNCTION Input Color Connects to Also Connects to

Right Amplifier (wiring should be done at amp location) FUNCTION Input Color Connects to Also Connects to

Right Front + VT L. BU/RD (Tweeter) + On Door Woofer*

Right Front - D. BU/RD L. BU/BK (Tweeter) - On Door Woofer*

Right Rear + D. BU/WT TN/VT

Right Rear - D. BU/OG TN/BK

*Wire Colors not shown in any factory schematics. The door woofer is wired internally to the amplifier.

I'm reading this as:

Connect the Green (+) and the Brown/Red (-) directly to the new speakers?

Yes? No?

I don't have any of the colors listed for the rear speakers visible from the front, I haven't taken the rear panel off to assess the colors for the rear speakers yet.

Who wants to come over and drink a beer over this?

Those colors are right for a 98. So in your front doors use Dk. Green +, Brown/Red - on Drivers, Purple +, Dk. Blue/Red - on pass. If you are not changing your rear speakers you can pull the rubber back where the wire goes through the door jamb and get the colors for them there. You will have to jump them then at the front speaker locations. Only problem is I don't have a diagram to tell which is + and - for them. Perhaps it's in an old post here or some one else might have it?
