Hey folks;

I am considering going from my 3. 54 standard rear end to a LSD and was wondering if anyone can tell me what all is involved in making this switch. Is it an easy conversion or am I better off finding a used rear axel already set up with the LSD.

How expensive is it to convert my rear end. Details on the proceedure and a list of parts needed would be great

Thanks Jim Curry

Fro, what I can find out the LSD is an expensive piece. I was told at one time that Mopar was out of stock. It runs about $200 to have it properly set up at a shop.

Hi Jim;

I am currently looking to do the same thing.

From the service manual you will need to identify which of the 4 possible differentials you may have.

The 8 3/8" axle has the ID tag attached to the top right corner bolt.

The 9 1/4" Axle has the ID tag attached to the top left corner bolt.

If you have one of these 2 you need what is called the Sure Grip has 2 piece case that is interchangable with the the standard differential.

If you have the model 60 differential, identified by the ID tag attached on the left side set of bolts and has the part number and gear ratio stamped on the tag, then you will need to look for what is called the "Trac-Lok" which uses a one piece case.

If you have the model 70 differential, also identified by the ID tag attached on the left side set of bolts then you will need to look for what is called the "Power-Lok" which uses a two piece case.

From the manual it looks simple enough to tackle and make the upgrade. :eek:

I am just about about to check with the auto wreckers for a used one and I have a local shop trying to get me a price on a new one (or rebuilt).

Once you have identified which differential you have drop me a E-mail. I'll be more than happy give you the more information on it. :)

I hope you get more replys to your question, especially from those who have already made the upgrade.

I am almost sure both of you guys have Dana 70's in your Cummins powered rigs. If you have a 60, I have a NOS trac lock for sale. I'll take $200 and its new.

I just installed a Lock-Right from Powertrax in my 1993. I bought it from Central 4 Wheel Drive, I think I paid about $316 for it, KILLER price for a locker, and it installs with hand tools. My rear end fought me for 2 days, kinked rolled pin, but the locker installed in about 1 hour. It is a little harsh but not bad after you get used to it for a few days. I love it, much better than a lsd unless you never leave the road. Besides you can scare the heck out of people when it locks back up after a turn:D .

Hi mprtrpr;

What is this power trax you are talking about? Can you post a link to the company website or give us some more info on this? You got my curiosity going right now! The best deal I got so far for the Dana Spicer 70 with 3. 54 LSD was $790 cdn + tax. Not bad I guess... but kind of a bit of a tough bill to chew on though. I am still doing my home work on this.

Detroit Locker

I put a Detroit Locker in my 91 it is the best improvment ever. Its a little hard on tires but will go anywhere you want to go.

OK I am getting rather frustrated on this LSD issue. I am getting quotes locally from $790 (parts distributors) all the way up to $1800 (from Mopar). And I was told by another parts dealer that the differential case assemblies are all the same between the models... Sure-Lok, Trak-Lok, Power Lok all the same (In principal perhaps but I seriously doubt that they are all the same) . Another parts distributor said just make sure the one you get is for 1990 to 1993 models.

Fastmark ... I would take your LSD if I new it would fit in a the DANA 70 . From the service manual it does not look to be the same though. Thats too bad... .

The Power Trax LSD does not seem to be available locally here. So I have not had a chance to ask about thier pricing and availability. Had a look at thier website though (looks like a great alternative). Thanks for the link (above).

So looking for a little help here... my questions to you folks with upgrades to LSD's are:

Would you mind sharing the MOPAR or DANA or Power Trax part number so as I can confirm that what they are trying to sell me is the right thing? :confused:

What should I be looking for price wise? ($790 still seems to be a bit steep for what it is... :eek: am I right?)

If you are willing to sell me an LSD here in Canada I would love to hear from you. I am a serious buyer and want to get it done before the fall (The LSD is for a DANA Spicer 70; 3. 54:1 gearing on a model RAM 250 93' 2wd).
