Duramax question

93 ford auto transmission question

My buddy is looking at a 2000 Monaco motorhome with a Cummins ISC 8. 3 engine in it. I've heard of problems with the CAPS fuel injection system used on some of the earlier ISC's. I was wondering if they were still a problem in 2000. Is there any other things(engine related) that he should be concerned about? Thanks in advance for the input.

I suggest he have the dealer install a new CAPS pump and latest ECM program before he buy it. This way he will get the latest fixes and should get good service out of the rig. If they won't go for it, have them bring the price down $3K and he can have it done himself. The ISC is a very good engine in my opinion and he should be happy with it. The only other issue I know of was a lot of customers complained about excessive oil carryover out the blowby tube and they oil would cover the towed car, it didn't do much for the look of a Lexus. Also if it has a Holset air compressor he should have it replaced with a Wabco. The Holsets would fail the unloader valves and quit pumping air in as little as 50K miles.

These are the issues he will have problems with if any, in my opinion.

If he does buy it, make sure he reads and understands the Cummins warranty, even the small print. A lot of coaches are sold with an aftermarket warranty and it is not a Cummins warranty so it is up to the customer to recoupe the costs after the repair. Cummins warranty usually does not cover travel time and mileage or towing after a specified time after initial purchase, usually 1 year. Also maintenence items may fall out after 1 or 2 years or 100k miles, this includes turbos, water pumps, fuel pumps, injectors, vibration dampners, fan hubs, and air compressors.

It all depends on what warranty it comes with. He could also call a Cummins distributor with the engine serial number and a salesman should be able to explain what is and isn't covered.
