I am new to the deisel trucks I have been a dodge owner for years and would like a deisel for the milage and power as I tow a 22 foot trailer and use it to haul snowmobiles in the winter on my deck. Any info on the 1993 and older would be appreciated, which years to avoid, I have heard the manual trans to do not stand up and the auto torque convertors slip. Also any performance mods that work with out shortening the life of the engine. And possibly info on fuel milage auto vs manual. Yes it will be a 4x4. I am currently looking at a 1991 reg cab 4x4 with Auto and 172,000 km. thanks

Hello Mike 1:
I'll start off with the truck I have, the miles, and some mods. You'll end up judging for yourself on your purchase of a first gen. truck. Here it is: 92 4WD 5SPD, 22+ mpg. , 3. 54 rear, 305 85R 16 tires. The Turbo housing is a 16cm, the injection pump is turned up for torque, and h. p. An Eaton trans. filter and side plate kit was installed at 100k. Now - the truck has 145k, with the original GETRAG 5 SPD GEARBOX, and original 3. 54 rear. No whine, growling, etc. I drained both at 50k, 100k, and will again at 150k. Do I recommend the 5 SPD? Yes. Also- the 92 has an intercooler. Does the 91? Let me know how you're making out in your search.

I have a 92 as well as a 2000. The 92 is a 4x2 RC with the auto OD trans. The truck has 171,000 miles and still has the original trans though I don't tow that much with it. I haven't had to do anything to the engine except adjust the valves and replace a throttle linkage. I also had to replace the TPS once. I have 235/85/16E tires and get 21. 5 mpg mixed city/hwy. Running only highway at 70-75 I get about 23 mpg (with 3. 54 LS gears).

the 91 I was looking at does not have an intercooler, I would rather have the 5 spd but was not sure of it's relability. Do you use synthetic and what grade, what is the cost of the trans filter kit, and do you pull with your truck. on the turbo housing what is 16cm smaller or larger, cost and where do I get one. Do you know your current horsepower and torque. Do you run a bigger exhaust. I am in no hurry to buy the first truck I find so time is not a problem. Thanks for your help

Mike: I'll attempt to answer your questions.
1) I believe the 5sd is the way to go. Better gear selection, and reliability and ruggedness, beats the auto. , without extensive mods. (147k mi. )
2) I DO NOT use any synthetic lube anyplace in the truck. 15w40 in the engine, (Valvoline All Fleet Plus) and the same in the Getrag gearbox.
3) The 16 cm hot end turbo housing is smaller internally (downsized from the 21cm2 stock unit) to spool up quicker, and provide higher boost. Cost is about 150. 00 from Ted J. , or Diesel Injection of Pittsburgh, etc.
The Transfer case / Gearbox filter is an Eaton part #K-1444 available from and good truck Transmission and parts supplier. 26. 00
4) Exhaust is a 3 1/2" dia. Banks freeflow stinger.
5) Oil filter Cummins Fleetguard Microglas, K&N air filter.
8) Occasionally pull 11000# equipment trailer.
9) With injection pump adjustments a guess at hp @240+, and torque @500. No dyno test, and don't care to, stock was 160 hp. , 400 ft/lbs. the truck rolls out quite smartly now, and I've got a few more tricks, tweaks and mods. to go. Take your time in your search, good luck, think again about the intercooler, it's a real asset. (oh yeah - 22 mpg. )
