Infrared Temperature probe

With all of the concerns over temperatures of differentials, trannies, tires, brakes and such, let alone all the under the hood concerns, I have been contemplating getting an infrared temperature probe. I realize it is NOT an alternative to an EGT gauge, as it is kind of hard to use under the hood going down the road, but would be good for cylinder comparison, tires on both trucks and trailers, brakes, differentials, and ... and...

Does anyone have one, recommend one, either this one or a different one ?... or is it likely just a waste of money?...



It seems the wider the temperature range, the costlier, and this one goes to 1400° F..... Gerry

Raytek Temp Probe

I use a Raytek InfraredTemperature Probe and I like it! There is no end to what items you can measure the temperature of without getting your hands dirty or burned!! Great tool!

Thats pretty much all I use at work for HVAC / appliance repair along with being very usefull in autmotive. I also have found that they are as common as those new pocket razor knives. Everybody and their mother makes one ans guess what ... many are all the same! However yes you will spend more for the greater temerature range in which it is able to read. both of mine read to 800* and it's rare i ever get close to that.

IR thermometers are cool but...

Do some research on the emissivity requirements for proper IR temp readings. If the object is shiny, aluminum colored, or other bright color, the indicated temp may (is usually) be incorrect. For the rear diff (stock or in between fins on Mag Hytec), the engine block, tires, exhaust manifold, and other dark, dull finish objects, the accuracy should be adequate.

I have a Radio Shack IR Thermometer which set me back about 32 bucks. It works just fine and would be suitable for most readings. I use it on trips to check tires, differentials, transmission, A/C, trailer wheel bearings, etc...

The only one I could find with them has a 400° high limit and would seem good for all except exhaust, but I always have been one for overkill, so will likely be getting the 1400° one... .

I have the Raytek Minitemp MT4 with Laser Sighting, its probably one of the cheapest but it works great. I use it all the time in the HVAC industry
