If it sounds kind of like valve ping, mine does it too under heavy throttle while climbing. Please let us know what you find out. I've been curious, but not enough to let the dealer get involved #ad

I have a noise coming from the engine compartment that I’m worried about. It sounds like a tapping or rapping noise. It is somewhat present at highway speeds with RPM’s around 2000, but is very loud if I floor it going up a hill when on the highway.

I’m worried this is the lift or injection pump. Anyone have this noise too, or know what it might be?

Nothing yet. Haven't taken it to the dealer. The truck runs great, so I haven't felt a pressing need to take it in. I'll probably wait until I need to take it in for something else, and ask about this at that time.

I'll post back when I found out something.

Had mine to Cummins 3 times and every time the mechanic ( different ones ) said its normal combustion knock. Mine does it all the time in gear, sounds like a top end knock on one cy, heard best by drivers door when open or when driving by a barrier wall.

Note: just replaced DD2's with replacement set of DD2's and knock is not as previlant. One injector, #3, had a big gob of carbon on the tip at the nozzlels, the rest were clean as a whistle. They had 0 miles since 2200 mi trip towing 5th.

So, Puff, what did you find out about this?

Very interested to hear, since mine has made this sound since new also.


Only does it when you put the pedal to the floor.
 
I had at least something similar, and when I put a fuel pressure guage on my truck, it would not register past the first mark on my guage (2psi). I put the mallory fuel pump on my truck and the pinging went away. It was most noticable when I set the cruise at highway speeds. If it is the fuel pressure problem, the dealership won't have a clue.

Anyway, just my . 02 worth.

It was a gradual thing, and did not detect it overnight, and only realized that I had a pump failure when I put the gauge on and it would not register above 2psi. Once I installed the new lift pump, I could really tell the difference.
