This is regarding my 04. 5 3500 with 78,00 miles.

Been having long cranking times during start-up and louder fuel clacking than normal.

Set appointment with dealer, told him I run a large company and drive 150+ miles per day and needed my truck back ASAP. The first day my truck was in it just sat there in the lot. At the end of the 2nd day he told me that the some of the fuel injectors were bad. He said that he would have to call DC to approve injector replacement and that they would probably not replace all of the injectors.

I asked how they tested to find the bad injectors and the service manager said by sound only - they have no way of removing and testing injectors. I told him that I wanted all six replaced no matter what. He replied that I could purchase the extra injectors for $632. 00 EACH.

Rather than calling DC on Thursday, the service manager waited until Friday afternoon, and supposedly they are closed Friday, Sat, Sun, and Mon for Easter. Now I have to wait until Tuesday for a reply from DC, then wait for the dealer to order and install however many injectors DC approves.

When I told the service manager this was was poor and unacceptable service and I needed a correctly fixed truck ASAP he thought for a second and with a totally straight face suggested that I trade my truck in for a new one!

1. Does anyone think that replacing only a few injectors on an engine with 80,000 miles is OK?

2. Does anyone know how to turn this dealership/service manager in for poor service?

Thanks

With the Juice you are pushing the injectors harder than what they were designed for. Longer duration means hotter coils shortening life. If they replace any for you feel like you came out ahead. If star finds out you have a box you won't get any. Reman injectors are about $350 each at the dealer.

Reminds me of the analogy -- IAMOWS (I am my own warranty station). Much too easy nowadays to bump up performance on these new trucks, and just as easy if not easier to break them.

Good luck Boyd, I hope you took off the box before taking it in, tho I think they can detect it anyways. My work truck is exactly that, a work truck, not play. It makes me money, and when its down I make no money. So no mods that could take me down.

good luck

Hi Bob4X4.

I was under the impression that "duration-only" boxes, such as the Van Aaken C-3. 2, were much safer to use than boxes incorporating high pressure. Other than the possibility of higher EGT's, while towing, I haven't heard of any problems caused by "duration-only".

Could you please explain what the coil is & how it's damaged by the extra duration?

Regarding Boyds problem with "clacking injectors", could they just be carboned-up? I had that problem with my '03 (no boxes) & was able to cure it with additives containing injector cleaners. It took awhile but, worked.

Thanks for your input, Bob4X4.

The common rails use coils on the injectors,as designed they work prety hard but when you keep them on longer they work harder... . more heat. Increasing duty cycle will always shorten life to some extent.
