Started my truck this AM and it started, ran rough and dumped out white/blue smoke for about 3 sec. The idle cleaned up but sounded like it was ticking more than normal. What do ya think a leaking/bad injector. I've noticed lately a light haze at low rpm, low throttle input with the Juice off, 90% of the time I leave the Juice on level 1 for mileage(80 mi. commute). Also temp was 55 cool for S Fla but I let the light go out and grids stay on for about 10-15 sec before starting.

Sounds pretty normal to me. The colder it gets, the worse it gets. I can darn near clear the street if I don't plug my truck in. It's been in the teens here at night for quite a while now.

Not normal. What you described sounds like the symptoms of faulty injector(s). Smoke like that is trying to burn accumulated fuel in the cylinders that has leaked out of the injectors overnight. Good luck getting a dealer to check them much less replace more than one if necessary. These 3rd gens aren't even recommened to be plugged in until 20 below (farenheit). The use of the block heater only masks the symptoms. My 04. 5 started that way & got worse. Good Luck.

I have a n active thread on a similar issue right now. Mine did some similar stuff, and it started immediately after installing the juice. I have recieved a couple PMs indicating this may not be a coincidence. Mine is going into the dealer tomorrow.

I don't get lots of smoke at startup, but I do have a VERY rough idle, and white smoke after letting off the throttle. I don't know if it's injecters or what, but I should know within a day or two. I'll keep you posted.

Kday, there has been quite a lot of discussion about this kind of issue on this forum and many times the problem has been improved or cured with a heavy dose of good diesel fuel conditioner and/or a can of sea foam. I wouldn't use the Sea Foam by itself. It would be good to use fuel conditioner on a regular basis (most every tank) such as Stanadyne, Howes or Amsoil if you aren't currently doing so.

Thanks guys I've been using power service and seafoam quite a bit but I'll try a heavy dose. The smoke just started the other day after adding some conditioner and when it's warm it runs fine. Thanks for keeping me updated on what the dealer says. I'll check back in a couple of days, I'm off to the Hospital-my wife is having a scheduled c-section for my new baby boy! Thanks.

Congats on the new baby!!!!!!!! Hope all goes/went well. That's even more exciting then bringing home a new truck! Well almost, just kidding!!

Just an update, first and foremost baby and mom are doing fine only problem now is sleep deprivation. I just ran a bottle of Seafoam and a bottle of Redline diesel catalyst (only additives Advance had) in 15 gal of diesel and 100 mi and my hard starting and rough running is almost gone. Hopefully it was carboned up injectors with the the cool air magnifying my symptoms. Thanks, Ryan.

Funny, my truck started this same this this past Tuesday night... 33K miles. I put some fuel conditioner it it earlier that day. I used the Valvoline stuff. Hope I didn't mess it up. Like you though, it only happens on a cold start. Once it us up to temp everything is just fine.

I'm driving to Alabama this weekend, so I guess I'll get some Power Service from a truck stop and run it hard!

Correct me if i am wrong, but aren't alcohol containing products not recomended in these trucks? Ever read what is in seafoam? ALCOHOL!

Just had the same problem with my 06, they said it was injector #2. They said they cleaned it and for me to use an additive every other tank. When it was first brought in they said #2 was missfiring due to a bad ECM, so they ordered one and then 2 days later I get a call that the injector was just carbon fouled. It took them 6 days to fix it and when I got it back there was grease all over my leather seats and carpet. After they cleaned the truck and I took it home it was running stronger than it ever had. (truck has 9000 miles on it) That night about 60 miles later it started again. Also FYI, when it was in I told them about a slight vibration it had at 65, thinking it was something i would just live with like my 04. 5, the said there was a TSB for it and they replaced the tie rod ends and the steering damper?? Truck feels much better than it ever has in the front end (smoother, runs straight) but still have the driveline vibe that they of course "couldnt duplicate" Anyway, Please post your results with this issue, as will I... Thanks

Dozzer,

What dealer did you use? You said they said to use and additive every other tank too, did they recommend a specific one?

I drove my truck to Alabama this weekend and the PS seamed to have cleared up my problem. Going up I was a little concerned. However about 100 miles from my destination the missing completely stopped and it has ran great for the last 1000 miles. I notice my MPG got a whole lot better too. Over the last 1000 it has jumped up to 22. 0!!!!

aarlucas,

Sorry it took so long to reply, I have been gone all week. I took it to Greenway and the mechanic gave me a bottle of some stuff called ADT (Advanced Diesel Treatment). I have run it in the last tank and for the first 200 miles it was running stronger than it has since new, but it is running rough and knocking at low RPM about every 3rd start now. It cleans itself up after about 1000 RPM but there is still a problem. I have called the dealer and they are having me back in on Monday to replace the injector. What really sucks is the 04. 5 I have is stock and it will blow the doors of of this 06. When my wife and I lined them up about 20mph and we both floor it, the 04. 5 leaves me in the dust. I know with 10000 miles it is not broke in yet but with a higher engine rating, I expected more from it. Also the 04 will launch off the line with just a tap of the pedal and the 06 is a dog off the line, It must be torque Managment because once you are rolling the turbo will spool and it moves. Anyway, I will let you what happens after the new injector... . Oo.

my 04. 5 recently started giving me problems after reading a similar post. I see white smoke at startup after extended cold soak. then after i start it up i can shut it down right after the cloud of white smoke and restart it and it will make a puff of white smoke again. Also at full throttle with only a quadzilla boost fooler (tuner), stock fuel system from lift pump to injectors, the truck seems to stumble. Are these also symptoms of injector problems? The truck used to run a banks 6 gun with speed loader at level 6 all the time and i recently had the seals changed on the pressure relief valve fittings on the fuel rail. the seals were sweating and I just asked the truck shop what they thought then next thing i know on my bill was the pressure relief repair without consent. I actually 1st noticed the problems after the pressure relief seals were replaced. Do you think i am losing an injector or two. or do you think they shop screwed up when they serviced the pressure relief? I didn't notice the problem with the smoke before service but wasn't looking for the white smoke either and didn't have the stumble.

I don't mean to hijack someones post. I simply thought I had similar symptoms and felt maybe my answer would be the same as the original poster's? My problems and answers may be able to help the original poster
