The dealer wants to replace my fuel filter and clean my injectors after putting in the intank fuel pump and a rebuilt VP44. They say to clean the injectors and new filter. They say there is a solution sprayed in the intake and hooked up to some sort of machine. what is the difference if I replace the filter and run injector cleaner through the system. Also what is the best intank additive for injector cleaner?

There system is a higher consitration of cleaner , if your in a warm climit [not lower than -10*fer. use a antigel ] , bio-diesel [ b20 , 20%-bio 80 dino ] Stanidyne seems to be one of the best [ mostly all the same maybe just higher consitrations of same chem. ]
There system will clean all at once , all the others over time , up to a few hundred milles .
Then use a good quality additive [ Stanidyne , Power Sevice , Howes ] every tank .

If they are spraying some junk in the intake, I'd run to another place. Diesels wont clean the fuel system by spraying the intake. I'd fill the filter canister with injector cleaner when you replace the filter, then put the rest of the bottle/ jug in the tank.

But, depending on your mileage, you may have injector pop pressures off a little, and no cleaner/ additive can cure that- they have to be removed and cleaned and recalibrated. Why is the dealer recommending the injectors be cleaned with their snake oil?

Like DPuckett said ,if they're gonna spray something in the intake all they're gonna clean out is your wallet! The fuel filter is a no brainer but it'll set you back 50 bucks or so at the dealers. I would't feel comfortable running straight injector cleaner through VP 44. JMO :)

Cummins used to sell a jug of injector cleaner for the larger engines, not sure if it's compatible with the smaller ones like the B series. With that stuff you would hook up a fuel supply and return line so they both went to the jug. Then you'd run the engine at a high idle (12 to 15 hundred RPM) for about an hour. It seemed to do a good job.
