Can anyone tell me if there is a way to tell if my injectors have been upgraded. The original owner of my truck died prior to my buying it so I can't ask. It seemed to be fairly stock when I bought it but it did however smoke upon acceleration through the gears. The lock collar is still on the max power screw and it is not adjusted all the way to it. I have maxed out the diaphragm and turned the starwheel down a few turns. I have also advanced the pump,(I am a new member but you guys have helped me out many times allready) It produces about 25 PSI max boost now and some black smoke through the gears which goes away after the boost rises. I don't want to waste money on new injectors if I allready have them. I am leaning towards the Power Wagons if I do switch due to the fact that I have a fair amount of smoke now. Any help would be great. :p

Don’t know if I will be much help, but I'll try. Here are the numbers I see on one of my stock injectors setting in front of me:

8965

KDAL 59 P 9 169

245 bar

BOSCH 937

FRANCE

I don't know how much of this you can see with the injectors in the head. It would be worth pulling one to see what they are before you buy a new set. It's pretty easy. Hope this helps.

Look on the side of the injector closest to the head you will see a four diget number. I've got a set of PW injectors and the number on them is 9744. These injectors are Cummins 185 hp injectors. If the former owner installed a set of Lucas injectors - sorry I can't help you there.

I'm betting if they were Lucas rlyons would know it... ;)

Don't be surprise if the injectors all have differnt printing on them, I've seen some with France, and some with Bosch and more. That is just the outside, the insides are all the same.

245 bar does sound like the 185's though. ?? My Lucas are 250 and they range from 250 - 255 bar.

Correct me if I'm wrong here guys...

Well my injectors appear to be stock. :( So now for the decision of what to buy. Do the PODs really give you enough more power to be worth the extra cost and smoke or should I go with the PWs? I can buy the PWs for somewhere between 275. 00 to 399. 00 depending on where I purchase them. Can someone give me some insight on the difference? Mine are marked with 8695 on the side so I am assuming they are stock. I want to do the injectors first, then an exhaust brake, then an upgraded seat. Unfortunately I can only afford to do them in steps so I don't want to waste money on more injector than I really need. :p

The numbers on my stock injectors I took out are the same as Old Smoky had but they say Brazil rather than France.

The number on the box for the PW injectors must be a stock number and not an actual part number. It is 0 432 133 875-740. Should have written down the number on the injectors before I put the new ones in a couple of years ago.

In general terms... as you go "up" in injector size some basic things change...

1) Number of holes (though not always)

2) Pop-off pressure

3)spray angle

You can have 4 hole 5 hole, and more depending on who's nozzle your using.

Some are extrude honed, which is basically pumping an abrasive thru a given injector. This abrasive smooths and rounds the holes out for more flow, less flow resistance and other characteristics...

The spray angle can change as well. It is important to have the spray angle within a certain range for a given application to keep the fuel cloud in the piston bowl. .

The pressure that the injector releases fuel is called pop-off pressure. Usually the larger the nozzle the higher the pop-off pressure. Since it's sending in larger amounts of fuel it needs a higher pressure to keep a well atomized cloud, OR, you need more smaller holes at the same pressure, as an example.

The Bosch 185's are a nice injector. They give a decent boost in RWHP and do help in acceleration, and overall top end.

The POD's (Lucas) are the same over again... they will typically give in the range of 50-58 RWHP and make one heck of a difference in the overall power.

POD's do have a bit of hazing at idle or low boost. However almost any injector will do that if the pump is not set up properly, or you have air in/ air out restrictions.

You can "detune" your pump a fair bit and still get more out of the POD's than you can with the smaller 185's.

The more you can ease up on your pump, the longer it will last.

It's likely that in the future you will want to play with a bit more HP so I'd say go with the POD's and pump tune accordingly.

There isn't that much difference in the cost and you will get the entire install kit, with proper washers, and balanced/tuned injectors from PDR.

Just my opinion here... :)
