I'm going nuts here with this one. I have a build up of oil, dirt etc on the of the upper drag link, about an inch inboard from the steering box. You can scoop the remains off by hand and roll it into a ball of soft dirty oily shhhh, which has accumilated since late May. Only place I figure the oil's coming from is a 5/8" hose that comes out of the top of the injector pump gear access cover. The hose is definitly factory as it has pre-formed bends and a clamp that prevents it from being sucked into the fan. The hose is directed up from the cover an inch or so, then 180 down till it turns at the bottom of the cover then drops straight to about an inch to the right of the steering box. Here's the only thing I can find in the shop manual (for hours last night - section 9, I think, in the Diesel Engine sector) is the access cover, seal behind it, then the cover plate? Is this some means of ventillation for the gears churning behind the cover and is a tiny bit of oil OK/Normal? Did they leave it out of the shop manual just to give us something to do late into the night?

Also, is there a better way to bleed off the fule filter than just letting it dump on the front differential? I'm thinking of lengthening the hose to promote the use of a catch can figured I'd see what you guys were doing first. ;)

Thanks

You're looking at your CRANKCASE breather—messy isn't it!

Use the search feature. Various attempts to improve upon the design have been discussed here numerous times.

It is the crankcase breather as stated above. I have added hose to the breather and the fuel filter so that they drain etc behind the front axle and below the frame. I think some people may have tried to run the breather hose all the way to the rear of the truck. Do what works for you.

I took that stupid bottle out, got a 3/4" hose connector and ran a piece of 3/4" heater hose straight down to the ground. Now my engine stay spotless and the oil drops dissapear into the wind. Total cost of materials: $2. 10. took me 15 minutes. Try it, you wont be sorry

I have the same problem,But mine is slinging oil eveywhere. Also it leaves oil in the driveway now . I think I may have a problem here ,The oil build up is more than normal ,its even more then excessive. Is there another problem. I have oil slinging under both wheelwells all over engine and hood .

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
