base line settings for pump

Hello,

The station where I fuel up just switched over to the ULSD a few weeks ago so I run in there to get a few gallons, 5 to be exact, and I notice the new sticker on the pump, no big deal. I was heading out of town and all was good for about 30 miles then it starting cutting out to the point that it shut down while heading down the road at 60 mph. I coast into a parking lot and pop the hood and nothing seems abnormal and I jump in and it starts right up, needless to say I head back toward home and it cuts out the same way going back. Once home, I find out that the pump is leaking, photo in my profile in case I can't figure how to get one in this message. I was wondering if there is anything that I'm not seeing that could possibly be tightened up enough to stop the leak, or am I looking at a reseal job on the pump? I called a outfit that works on diesels and said it would run about 500 to 600 bucks for a reseal, or around 1100 for a reman pump. I guess if its not something I can fix, might just as well get the ramn. Any suggestions ?

Leaking at the high pressure head to case seal (O ring). You may want to pull the pump and perform the seal job yourself.

I doubt a couple of gallons through the system would have caused this. If the pump is all original and untouched then it was it's time for seals.

Thanks for the help. I don't know if I would have the confidence to pull the pump and also get it back on there and in working order. I'll have to think on that one.

Seems there have been a lot of this same seal failing. Could be the fuel or could just be old age. Mine failed a couple of months ago. I haven't had it fixed yet as I had a spare pump. I think I will have it rebuilt when I do as it has 200,000 miles on it anyway.

The cutting out sounds like the connection(s) to your shut-off solenoid. I'd clean and tighten those connectors before I worried too much about that symptom.
