Hi, I'm getting ready to do a little tweaking to my pump. Nothing radical, just a little bit on the smoke screw and turn the Power adjusment screw 135-degrees or less then readjust the idle . I've been reading all the older threads about this and I stumbled across a thread stating that turning up your power screw will wear your pump out faster. Am i at risk with these mild adjustments? I can live with the truck like it is ,if that's the case. cause driving is better than walking. . I have 125000 miles on my truck and I change my fuel filter when I change my oil (3500-4000 mi. )..... Thanks for looking... ... Chuck

Turning the power screw that much should be OK. So long as the idle doesn't go up much or at all, as a rule of thumb, you won't be adding much risk. turning the screw a lot raises the idle, say to 1000 rpm, and then you are taking more of a chance. You may have trouble turning the screw very much because of the "anti tamper" collar which is hard to remove. Sometimes by using a well-fitting socket you can turn the screw and the collar will pop back to the next thread.

Thanks Joe,

I got the collar of the adjustment screw by spitting the seem on it and slowly but firmly twist rolling it off . I think I got away easy with that. I only went 135 degrees on the power screw and a little less on the smoke screw . Had to turn the idle down a bit. I used a old 10mm open end wrench from a old Honda tool kit, just heated it up and bent it at the end till it fit perfect in that crowded little space to undo the nut on the idle adjustment... .

Just got back from a test drive and I am impressed with the response off the line and on the highway. . I don't have to step into it near as much at takeoff to get that truck to move. I may mess around a little more with the smoke adjustment... I'll be interested to see how my mileage differs... ... This site sure does have some kickass info. . Well worth the price of admission... Thanks again... ... ..... Chuck

I'm right there with ya Chuck! I did my first pump tweaks last night... I'm looking forward to playing w/ the aneroid setup, but for now I just twisted the power screw and smoke screw (a little more than you did)

oh, and for those thinking about doing this, I found the best way to adjust the idle was to hit the locknut w/ a chisel and a hamer to break it loose and then to re-tighten it... read that on this site too! :D

Forrest,

I'm not done yet!! I got my eve on a 4" Fair Shake exhaust system and I'm expecting a Old Smokey Filter mount to stick under the hood... . I didn't put any of the caps back on yet ,so I'll be experimenting with the two adjustments a bit more . Sure does wake the old truck up a bit doesn't it?... ... ... Chuck

Straight pipe

I know this doesn't have anything to do with the pump but:

Straight pipe(4") Oooooh so sweeeet! thats what you should go with.

Good Luck

Steve:eek:

yeah, I was underneath the truck yesterday and figured out I could run a 4" pipe w/ pretty much a straight shot from the downpipe past the axle if I tuck it up close to the bed... I'll be doing a 4" downpipe of course and probably a 5" turnout. :D
