I'm in the process of replacing a leaky tappet cover gasket, and I'm about ready to remove the injecotr pump. I wonder if someone who has done this before might answer a couple of questions:

1. Once I have the cam shaft timing pin and injector timing pin locked in place, how do I keep the engine from rotating while I use a breaker bar to loosen the timing pump gear nut? It seems that even if the engine moves just a little while loosening the nut, it will snap off the lock pins.

2. I watched the "Timing in 40 MInutes or Less" video, and in it the guy reaches behind the timing cover and just pulls out the cam shaft lock pin. Mine seems pretty well set in place. How is this thing removed? Is there a lock ring, and if so, how does that come out?

Thanks!

Paul

Loosen the nut first. The gear fits so tight on the shaft it isn't going anywhere until you pop it loose with the puller.

Get a barring tool and insert it in the flywheel, Do as hsmith says, break it first, use the barring tool to set the postion for the pins to be put in place. Then pull out the timing pin. Then proceed.

Forget the cam timing pin, find your TDC using the drop valve method. The pin could be off as much as 2 degrees, because it is mounted in an adjustable holder. I have my pin RTVed to the case to prevent oil leakage.

BTW, the "Timing in 40 minutes or less" will only give you a close proximity to stock timing. If you want to advance the injection timing, now is the time to do it.
