Hello All,
With the help of a friend we swapped my dead 99 injector pump with a donor from a 2001 ram.
I was happy to hear the ole rusty Green Monster rumbling again after the 6 hour swap.
It has been sidelined for almost 2 years...

At startup, it was responsive to throttle and the rpm showed on the dash tach. My grin was from ear to ear!!

Sometime later I heard a slight brief cough from the idling engine and discovered the dash tach at zero and the throttle barely responsive.
Pushing the pedal gave a momentary increase and then nothing throughout the range of pedal motion. Just a smooth engine idle.....

That was yesterday. This morning I started the truck easily and had both RPM and pedal control as expected.
I went inside to let it warm up and had returned to find the same weird change. No indicated RPM on the dash and the same odd pedal response.

All the while a nice smooth sounding idle from the beast....

I waited a bit and returned to try the test again, this time with the code reader. On startup (engine light has been on since the first start):
P0238,0122,1698,1689,1688 and the antiskid warning light.

I cleared the codes and restarted. No initial engine lights or antiskid warning, normal indicated RPM on the gauge and correct throttle response.
I had to leave at the point and will have to restart the testing Sunday morning..

Any initial thoughts from the members?

(my initial search did not find an appropriate thread on this topic. If anyone wants to point me to one, thanks!!)

David

Double check battery condition along with all grounds, both at the battery and Chassis. Also make sure the electrical connection at the pump is clean and tight. Some of those are VP codes but youve got a mixed bag there which may point to a poor connection somewhere. Is it charging properly? Is the injection pump out of the 01 a known good pump? Is it an SO VP (which is what your truck is)?

Thank you for the reply.
This morning I ran it for 30 minutes without a new fault or strange behavior.
Tach and throttle response were appropriate.
I noticed the plug handle at the vp44 electronic disconnect was out about 1/4 inch.

I need to give the truck a once over for any safety & rust issues and then get it legal before any long road test.
Fingers crossed for now!

It came out of a one ton automatic that was totaled in a nasty head on at 27k. The engine has been stored on my property for years. When we pulled the injector pump the fuel looked new that poured out of it. I don't know if it was an HO or not. I did grab a serial number from the pump if there is a way to tell from that. Perhaps the engine plate has something relevant on it also...

Great to have a running Cummins again!

If it came out of an automatic it is an SO pump so your good there.
Hopefully the plug was the issue!
