Twins idea ?'s

I have a 175 hp cummins with an p7100 pump and when I tried to lock it in place when I over-hauled the engine, I found that the timing tooth did not line up with the inspection plug hole, therefore I couldn't "lock it in place". Has anyone come across this problem before? The engine has @ 180,000 orginal miles on it and was wondering if this is due to mechanical failure or possibly a mechanical defect. I have the engine running and timed it by looking in the inspection hole and lining the tooth up as close as I can, " I can see the tooth in the hole but is toward the rear of the pump directly behind the plug, the locking pin doesn't even come close to contacting it.

Does any one know if a 8. 3 Inline injector pump will fit on a 5. 9, I might beable to get my hands on one pretty cheap, and if it works, I would like to replace the one that I am having problems with, but would like to know if they are interchangeable, I have 3000 gsk in the one I am running now and would like to install it in whatever pump I decide to run anyway.

The gear doesn't have to be in time with the others. You do have to time the pump to the engine in relation to the piston. TDC. If you look close enough you will see there is no keyway cut into the gear. There is however a keyway cut into the pump shaft for a different application.

Sorry but what I am talking about is the inspection plug on the pump itself that the locking pin is under the cap and can be reversed to lock pump at TDC when removing from an engine. The tooth that lines up with this pin dosen't pass in the area it needs to, it passes right behind, toward the governor end, the hole. I have timed the pump pretty close to where it needs to be and engine seems to run fine, but worried that the pump has something about to turn loose in it, or it just came from the factory with some sort of defect or misinstalled part.

Sorry about that. Can you get a pic of what your refering to? That might help. The pumps i install i bench time it and then install on the engine at tdc.

If the timing was advanced from stock the tooth isn't going to line up on the pump if the engine is at TDC, since the pump is "ahead" of where it was at the stock setting. What matters is setting it with a timing kit by measuring plunger lift, that matters more than getting it exactly in place with the pin on the pump. . . that's mostly handy for giving you a starting point.

From what I heard the 8. 3 pump is has a number of differences from the 5. 9L and is more of a pain than it's worth to try and make it work.

This pin doesn't line up when the injector pump is totally removed from the engine, I had completely disassembled the engine for a complete overhaul and bore job, when I tried to line up these timing marks before I reinstalled it on the engine, I noticed the tooth and lock pin didn't line up even after completly spinning the pump over by hand. I lined it up at what I believe is tdc, by looking into hole and spinning shaft till I seen the timing tooth swing around inside of the pump, but it dosen't line up with the plug hole, it is directly toward the rear of the pump from the center of the hole where the pin is reversed to catch it. I have the engine running in the truck and it is running fine, but I am worried that this is something that will eventually cause me a problem and was wondering if it was just possible that it was installed wrong from the factory, and not a catastrophic problem about to leave me on the side of the road.

the 8. 3 pump gets oil from teh front of the gear case not a separate oil line to the side of the pump. . biggest difference. . i was modifiing a 5. 9 case to use a8. 3 pump but i found a 5. 9 p pump any how ha. .

The housing on the 8. 3 is diffrent than the 5. 9. The 8. 3 is oiled with a gally in the front. The 5. 9 oils with a gally on the side
