I own a '94 dodge diesel, 2-wheel drive with 173,000 miles on it. The other day, I had driven about 40 miles when the old girl started to miss & lose power. It would then run ok. Then it would start to miss again. When I would slow down to make a turn or to stop at a stop sign it would stall. It would restart ok. I managed to get to my wife's place of work & swapped trucks. About 5 or 6 hours later I picked up my truck & drove it home about 20 miles without a problem. I took it to my dodge dealer to have it checked out. He informed me that I needed a injector pump. They quoted me a price of $3200 + labor. I think this is pretty high. Maybe someone can recomend a garage here in Ohio. I live about 40 minutes west of Cleveland. JLT

It could be something as simple as a broken spring in the over flow valve. You need to put a fuel pressure gauge on it so you can see what sort of pressure you have when it acts up. If you have poor fuel pressure then you may have an over flow valve problem or an air leak somewhere.

A new pump is around $1200 for a benched stock setup or $1500 for 300hp plus also benched. Theres usually a $1000 core. Figure about 5 hours to R&R/time pump. Should come in around $2000 to have anyone other than a dealer do the work. It's pretty easy to change out yourself and save the labor cost. Defanatly get a fuel pressure reading first. Could be something very cheap to fix. BD and Piers are good sources for the pumps and Overflow valves etc. Good luck. :)

Be sure and check the overflow valve first. I just replaced mine with one from performance diesel for $35. I had the exact same problem. Try keeping the tank full until you get your part in. It will keep your fuel cooler and the little spring from getting weaker. There are other possibilities causing your problem but the overflow valve is cheap and very easy to replace yourself and its a very common problem. If i can find the other thread with the info to order one i will post it back here.

Check yur shutdown soleniod and make sure its not getting weak and only holding the shutdown lever halfway open. You could tie it up if necessary.

Thanks for the help! I wish I had the time & knowledge to do this job myself, but unfortunately I'll have to pay to have it done. I did find a mechanic today that said he wanted to check out the truck. He said he couldn't believe the pump was bad. I think I will talk to him some more and ask him about everyone's suggestions, then go from there. Thanks again & I'll let you know how things turn out! JLT
