Last weekend, I noticed that my truck was starting to idle very rough when it was cold, in addition to white smoke. It has progressivly gotten worse over the week. Initially I thought it was timing rattle from my Smarty, but as it got worse, rationality set in. I'm guessing its injector(s). Yesterday I bought some Lucas oil, added 12OZ along with a fillupof diesel. Today, after installing the new exhaust, I started it and it actually had some blue in the smoke. Could this be from the Lucas additive, or is it more likely an indication of a bigger problem as in burnt piston or valve guides?

On Monday, I'll call in and get an appointment to have the doc's look it over.

You may want to have the dealer check the pressure timing senser on the pump. The local diesel pump service man has seen alot of problems with it.

JThiessen, How many miles?

Mine first did this on a trip to Fla in March (on start up with a hot engine).
It cleared up when I got home so I figured it was a bad batch of fuel.
But the last month or two (since it has gotten warmer) it has had white smoke and a dead miss at cold startup. (almost like the grid heater is not working)

I guess its time to take it in. Mine has around 18K on it. Also noticed the warning system for low washer (and low fuel) does not work.

I'm also right at 18K.

I had a simular problem with my 03. I was running an EZ Edge and figured the higher rail pressure may have caused the injectors to leak while it was sitting. I took the Edge off and the problem went away. No more rough running on start up. Good Luck
