I am looking for the scoop on injectors. I've heard that a better injector is out there. The stock ones do not have a very technical pattern from what I've read on TDR and am looking to pick up 50hps+- and try to improve my unlayden cruising miliage. Is it true a better injector spray pattern provides a more efficient use of fuel? Quality/Price tell me what you know?

Jon

'96,56K,4X4,3. 54,285s,Banks,Rip's4"T-Back, Amsoil thru,transmission rebuilt to 400hp/700ftlbs,aux transmission cooler w/fan 180 deg. sensor w/overide switch, it's all good!KDP next week!

I have used DD1's and DD3's. Neither added fuel economy, in fact both sets were about one mile per gallon less than stock injectors. Part of that could be(probably is) that I was using the power they give. The DD injectors that I have had were very good, smoother than stock anyway.

For a 24v the 275 RV adds some economy for most guys, but I know of no such injector for the 12V/

Also keep in mind that if you use the power the injectors give you that you WILL LOSE economy, no matter what injector. There is no such thing as more power AND better economy if you use the power.

Lsmith is right. Every upgrade I installed has decreased mileage. Of course the increase in power more than makes up for the loss im mileage. The best mileage was 27. 5 highway/20 in town when it was fairly new & stock. Now its about 22 highway/17 in town. (Even worse when I'm on it) I recently installed 300HP marines from BullyDog. From what I discovered is that too big of an increase in injector size will force you to upgrade the turbo. I looked at DDII's & DDIII's as well as 300HP marines, and chose the marines because they are about 1/2 price of the DDIII's. If I don't like them I can pull them out and just loose half of the money I would have with the DDIII's. ;) The least expensive shop for the 300's that I could find is BullyDog. The least expensive shop for the DDII/DDIII's is Diesel injection service in TX (I think).

JB, you could get some 215 injectors which can be had at for a great price. 300hp injectors are available too, but for the money, you might as well go with 370s. or you could think about a fuel plate.

Gifford,

Yes I got 27. 5 MPG from Waterbury CT to Wilkes-Barre PA numerous times. Take it for what it's worth - I have no reason to "inflate" my MPG results.

You want to look for injector with the correct spray angle. Like there are 3 or so sets of 370 injectors. You want an angle that will put all the fuel in the bowl of the piston. When it sprays on top of the piston (rather than in the bowl) you get smoke, heat, and less mileage. I can't remember the exact angle on mine, but i believe it is 145 degrees. I could be wrong. Piers at PDR is a wiz at this stuff, you could always ask him.

My highest mpgs were 28, but had a tailwind helping, 22 - 24 is normal. My feeling is that power upgrades will increase your fuel economy because of the ability to stay in a higher gear. You have to keep your foot out of your new found power or your mpgs will go down.

PM me for a great deal on one brand new in the box set of 370s SOLD!

I think you have to pay premium pricing for injectors with optimal spray patterns. Standard 370 nozzles are not optimal. I've heard the DD stage II are better.

98rammer gave great advice to start with 215 injectors. They are realtively inexpensive to buy used and give optimal pattern.

Mileage claims? I got 25 mpg with my truck loaded to 9k (under a topper, no trailer) in the Montana mountains running winter fuel. I average 20-22 mpg for my city/highway blends.

My 370s have been very nice upgrade and the cost are lower than most. I noticed no change in mileage once I got over the "Hammer Down" syndrome and went back to normal driving habits most of the time. I normally have 600 lbs of stuff in the bed at all times and get 17. 2 in town and 21. 5 at 75mph and that hasnt changed with the addition of mods listed below as long as I dont start racing a lot. Good advice to call Piers as he will tell you true.

Ok, how are you pulling the mileage? Tell me the secret, pleeease

I drive sensible almost always, truck never sees over 2000 rpm, best I have done was 18 highway, get about 16 back and forth to work 14 miles one way.

Oh and how about 275's in a 12v? is there such an animal and how would they work with a #8 plate?

Chris

The 4x4 and auto are part of the problem on mileage. The 275s are 24 valve injectors I believe. It may surprise you to find that a lot of folks that have bought a small upgrade injector have almost always moved up to a higher HP unit later on. The performance increase is very nice and you will want more as time goes on. A new set of 370s will prolly get as good a mileage as your old plugged up units as long as you drive the same as always. I installed my 370s as my 1st upgrade and saw no drop in mileage once I quit hammering it all the time. The 370s are prolly good for 40-50 HP but as you decide to do other mods you wont have to do the injectors again.

Come on down to Albuquerque..........

Gifford & T. Baker, and I'll show you 25. 5 MPG in my truck.

85 W350, 98 12v, K&N & 3-1/2" exhaust, 3. 54 gears, 35" tires.

Why don't you ask him how he does it instead of calling him a liar. There seems to be more and more of this kind of crap going on in these boards lately. What's up with that?

I have to agree.

I have gotten as high as 26 MPG out of mine with 33" tires and a grill guard, both are supposed to kill fuel economy. I can get 24 MPG anytime I want. Since it will be brought up, this is calculated mileage filled until the filler neck is filled, within a cup or two of fuel at each fill. My overhead computer will report at least 5 MPG higher than actual.

Cut the man some slack until you can PROVE him wrong.

Chris, your low mileage on the work trip is due to the truck never fully warming up. Met a 12 valver in town here who complained about his stock truck only getting 12 mpg. When I asked how much he drove it his reply was, "only two miles each way to work everyday. "

Your 18 mpgs on the highway is due to your stacks, the exhaust velocity is forcing your truck into the pavement. If you aim them back the added push is worth 5 mpgs. ;)

Really, have you checked your timing?

vssman , Hutchew & LSMITH,

I apologize for being sarcastic.

I did not call anyone a liar. A liar is somone who is purposly decietful and I doubt that is the case. I reserve the right to be skeptical about performance claims. Thease things are not provable on the internet one way or the other so we have the right to our opinoins without having to prove them either way.

I will try to be less sarcastic. Hand shakes?:)

Absolutely, T. Baker......

I was gonna be happy with 15 MPG when I built my truck. It was a huge surprise to get 25+ consistently. I just got 370's and a 4K gsk kit, so I might be getting that 15 pretty soon. Close as I can figure, I must be getting the awesome mpg by running 75 mph @ 2050-2100 rpm, right at the top of the torque curve. Maybe?

T Baker, handshake it is. Thanks for the consideration.

Hummin, I get my best economy by NOT driving easy. If you need to accelerate up to highway speed do it and get it done, lumbering up to speed will kill you. Coast every chance you get, if you need to stop a quarter mile up the road kick it in nuetral if manual or just let off entirely if auto. Don't downshift, coast. DO NOT use the cruise control, it costs me 1. 5-2 MPG. Maintain your speed with as little EGT and boost as possible. You can pull the same hill at 70 MPH with 1-2 psi less boost and 75-100 less EGT if you try. If you work at keeping boost and EGT down while maintaining speed in the highest gear possible the fuel economy will surprise you.

Hope this helps, works for me anyway.
